Here is one solution to What to do if You Hate the Start menu:

Why not Get rid of the Start button altogether? Like this: 1. Ctrl+Esc, or a klick on the Start button, to activate it. 2. Esc, or a klick on the Start button, to close the menu but to keep the focus on the pesky button. 3. Alt+dash (minus) pops up the System menu. The rest should be self-explainatory. If you "Close" the Start menu there is no way to get it back without restarting Windows, one way or another (yes, it will re-appear). If you're a more cautious type of person, you might want to choose "Move" instead, after step #3... This has been successfully tested on W95 and W98. It doesn't work on W2k, though. A comment will also be added to the thread "Customize the Tray" describing a method "how to get rid of all the icons in the tray with just a few keystrokes". That will, BTW, make the Start button re-appear instantly.
