Question about 'Windows keeps forgetting simple settings, such as screen colors!'

I am hoping to find an answer here. On start up I get a message that the driver for
the display is not the right one. When I tried to load the W98 generic driver I got
only 16 colors and VERY large (640X480) screen area. That is the max I can select
in settings. I tried to use the VIA 4-IN-1 BUT.. wierd.. as AOL kept starting when
it was installing <
