I have a solution for Getting
Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers:
This solution may already be posted here. I am posting it because no solution was
found quickly on this site, just a lot of half-inexperienced advice and none of it
applied to the specific variation of the problem.
It could be your variation of the problem is answered just fine by some of the posts
here. If not then this may work for you, if when you click on NetHood and Entire
Network on your Win98se machine, nothing updates to show your other computers, no
matter what you try or what advice you follow on here.
First go to this article at Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=238853
and see if your symptoms/problem are/is listed.
I had both troubles: 1.) "Unable to browse the network." and 2.) "Error 6118" from
typing "net view" at the command prompt.
You can also try the following to confirm if this fix will work for you.
Open Explorer. Hit F3 to open a search box. Type in "vredir.vxd". When the file is
found, right click on it and open "Properties". Check the version number. If the
number is 4.10.2222, then what you may have is a version of the file that was from
an older issue of Win98se which is ineffective.
The Microsoft article says (typcially) contact Microsoft and pay (through the nose)
for the support-fix.
But file you need to overwrite the version 4.10.2222 named in the MS article. (in
my case this was the "09/20/99 03:41pm 4.10.2226 165,461 VREDIR.VXD Windows 98 Second
Edition ) by going to this address.
http://www.network-drivers.com/drivers/36/36611.htm
The above link will throw you over to a page where you will see another link to the
DriverGuide home domain. Click on it and go there. It will say you have to register.
I recommend you do so. Very handy site with great tips emailed to you regularly.
If you are in a hurry though you can use username-"drivers" password-"all".
Download the file. Put it in a folder. Remember which folder. Go to the folder. Double
click the file and it will automatically install the fix, and overwrite the old file.
File version I got was 4.10.2228, but just so long as you get rid of the version
number 4.10.2222, you'll be okay.
Oh and be shure to keep the downloaded fixerfile archived in a folder, in case you
ever have to use your backup CD for any other kind of installation or upgrade operations...like
reinstalling NIC drivers or whatever. Because any install that calls for your copy
CD of Win98 OS could put the 2222 file back in there and you may need to reapply
this fix.
Hope it solves the win-woe for you.
