Windows Protection Error

I loaded an aftermarket virus protection program from the internet. I then "uninstalled" the program, and now windows 98 will not start, ceasing with "windows protection error - restart your computer" displaying. '98 will start in safe mode, and I did re-load '98 from the recovery disc and CD, but the error message remains. What can I try? Thanks Frank
