A lot of things can be affecting the performance. Disabling Find-Fast gives you better
system resource availability for example: STOP FIND-FAST

If you are not using SE then adding the AlwaysUnloadDll registry entry helps too: AlwaysUnloadDll

This little freeware program is the best of all at helping your RAM to clear: RAMpage 1.6

And using a good defrag is essential for all: PRO-DEFRAG [LITE VERSION]

Keeping "bloat files", such as index.dat empty helps very much as well: ..........

Automatic Deletion of TIF, TEMP & index.dat files. Delindex

And for all other temp files: EmpTemp

And running anti-spyware programs over your system helps too:

SpyBot is a VERY revealing program! Click on Language flag.

AdAware 6.0  SpywareBlaster

Running a good on-line anti-virus and security check is freely available and there
to help you:

Free on-line Anti-Virus check: HouseCall Anti Virus & Panda On-Line

And another from Symantec: Norton-Symantec

On-line security check from: Symantec Security Check

Configure your connection to protect your bios, etc.

... and a little more RAM can help too: [128-256Mb] depending on what you are using
the computer for. Don't add more than your overall system can handle.

MICRON RAM at CRUCIAL OR PRICEWATCH

Now you should see the speed increase with a clean system:
