I finally got it to work! I'll tell you how I did it, I don't know if it will apply
to your situation (my laptop is a toshiba, not a Compaq), but hopefully it'll help.
I spoke to tech support at Netgear and the first tech told me that the card was
probably defective and to just return it. I did, but got the same results with the
new card. The second tech I spoke to told me my laptop probably doesn't accept 32-bit
cardbus cards, which is what the WG511 is. I probably needed 16-bit PCMCIA cards.
So, I was going to return the card but decided to just double check and found out
that my system does accept 32-bit cardbus cards! So now I'm really annoyed and thought
I needed to call Toshiba tech support (which is a total nightmare)! Ultimately,
I searched around and found out that sometimes in Toshibas you need to change BIOS
settings to accept 32-bit cardbus. I checked and, sure enough, my BIOS was set to
accept only 16-bit and I just need to toggle the setting to accept both 16 and 32-bit.
It worked! But now my laptop freezes everytime I try to configure the card settings.
But I think that's because the laptop is pretty old and has an extremely small hard
drive. I already ordered a new HD a couple of weeks ago and it's on back-order,
so when I get it, hopefully everything will work!
Good luck with yours, I hope this helps! Let me know how it turns out!
