Question about 'How do I uninstall Windows 98?'

This morning(9/13) after a month and a half of problems on my '99 Gateway650 desktop--problems primarily stemming from loss of use of my DSL external modem.....and failing scanning function(and a month in the shop at Gateway), i decided to uninstall my Win98 and start over....but when i inserted the Restoration CD before booting up....and tried to go to this to clear out Windows...i found myself at the A:> prompt and didn't know what to do next......then i ran setup and thought this would prompt me to uninstall the program....and it never did......any ideas for me? I have had many comments from support staff at Gateway, AOL and Efficient Networks that, failing all else, Windows may be corrupted......so i think i should reinstall and start all over again......Peter

The restore disk normally will format the disk and restore the system to the orignal software. If this is what you are trying to do, at the a:> type d:restore . All information will be lost back to the day you bought the computer.

In my eyes :

Problem # 1 - Gateway Computer
(never heard anything good about 'em)

Problem # 2 - AOL
(their software is crap -probably what buggered up
     your system...Get a real ISP)

Just my humble opinion...

Good Luck

You could format your C and D drive, which will erase everything you have got on you pc. Backup everything you do not want to lose.

On Monday, April 12, 2004 Mudaliar RockySuresh when you find youself at the A:> prompt then just type "fdisk" and enter. It will take you at the partition table where you find the partion details. First you will have to delete all the partitions and then you will have to make new partition / partitions. Then it will prompt you to restar your system. Now when your system gets restarted you will again find yourself at the A:> prompt. Here you will have to format all the drive you created newly. e.g. if you want to format 'c' drive, then type format c: /s - where s is for your "system" Then it will again prompt you for rebooting your system. In the new drive you can install the OS

Question about 'How do you connect Windows 98 to SBC?'

You've tagged onto a five year old message thread. Your new question is a lonely, distant caboose and the thread isn't even about your own problem. Why don't you come back and write your own new message, instead? You'll have a much better chance of being answered.

If your PC is giving you trouble, and you would like to learn how to solve the problem, membership in the Annoyances Forums here is free. But there is a COST you are expected to pay if you hope for answers. You have to actually describe the problem, and the software, and the hardware, that is involved, in some detail. Any error messages generated should be included, in the EXACT words that were used. Decribe the system, detail the symptoms, and tell us what trouble shooting you have attempted so far.

If you have run searches for your problem, either here on Annoyances, or through a public search engine like Google, tell us you've done so. YOU SHOULD include normal text formatting, including capitalization where it is appropriate, paragraph breaks, punctuation, just as if it was a business letter. Please leave out any juvenile slang such as used in IM. Adults won't waste time on that.

Then, at the bottom, ignore the fallacious advice there, and *DO* check off the "Preserve Spacing" box. If you have difficulty with these suggestions, I can only advise you that the same sort of clear writing as I've asked for is what is needed for a good job-grabbing resume', or if you're not in the job market yet, for a good grade on a school paper of most any kind.

There is also a second cost that applies to using computers generally, not only to writing for help according to my suggestions. It's one that too many people resist, and yet it isn't that demanding. You need to take the time to learn more about what the PC is all about, how to tune it up, how to trouble shoot its problems, stuff like that. The very best way that I know of is to use a good reference, a book that talks to you like a friend, not like a stuffy engineering type of nerd, nor should it talk "down at you" like some College Professors might.

The most popular answer to this investment cost is the Dan Gookin book that has sold in the millions of copies and started a publishing trend with its friendly, no nonsense style: "PC's for Dummies" is truly a great book for beginners.

.
