Question about 'Clear Unwanted Entries from Explorer's New Menu'

I have a question about Clear Unwanted Entries from Explorer's New Menu:

It takes my computer about 5 seconds for the "New" menu to expand. I tried reducing the number of items to three, with no improvment. Why? Is it scanning the registry every time? Is there a way to disable this?

You must modify the following key in your registry. Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] Name: MenuShowDelay Type: REG_SZ (String Value) Value: 0-999 (milliseconds) The value of this key determines the time Windows (intensionally) delay before displaying new menus, so if you set this value equal to zero, acess to every menu displayed by Windows will be instant.

The other thing is that Windows memory management is kinda silly. After a while it winds up unloading certain things from memory, like the "New" menu, depending on the size of your Page File, physical memory, etc. So, you're right that it really does scan the message just about every time. The previous reply gives you steps to take to speed up the process, but even if you turn the default delay off, you're still going to run across this if you haven't used a menu for a while.

Can I remove it completely?

I want to remove the "NEW" menu completely for the same reason. Even with the MenuDelay
registry entry set to zero, and all file types removed with TweakUI, the menu "sticks"
(takes 3 to 5 seconds to open only to show two options, "shortcut" and "folder").
It's annoying because it's above "Properties" which is a menu I access fairly often.

If I can't remove it completely, can I possibly reorder that menu so that "Properites"
is above it?

Thanks.

YES! You can remove it completely.
To remove option NEW from right-click menu when you click on desktop, follow these steps:

1. Start registry editor by clicking START --> RUN and type in regedit

2. Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New

3. In the LEFT editor panel right-click on this key named "NEW" and choose EXPORT; then choose some location where to export this key in case something goes wrong!!!

4. In the LEFT editor panel right-click on this key named "NEW" and click DELETE

DONE!

In case you need to restore changes for any reason, just find the .reg file you exported in step #3, double click the file, and entries are back in the registry!

WooHoo! My Win98 Regedit didn't have the right click context menu in the left hand pane, so from the Top Window menus I chose Registry -> Export Registry File for step 3, then Edit -> Delete for step 4. It's gone! Not surprised it was a regedit, but I had no way of figuring out how to do it. Thanks man!

My windows 98 somehow got corrupted after updating the drivers of an Nvidia video card...now i no longer have the option to create a "NEW Folder" under the file menu. While some people want to remove it, i would like it back, as i actually used it often. Any ideas? Or in Regedit, what are the values so i can add it by hand. Note: Ken said to find : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New "New" does not even exist in my registry...but Nvidia added a folder!! May have replaced it. thank you
