Question about 'All of my desktop icons just became corrupted - what do I do?'

I have a question about All of my desktop icons just became corrupted - what do I do?:

When I reboot, all my icons turn into black squares and my mouse freezes. I believe that's a bona fide "crash." This occurred after I attempted to adjust my monitor resolution settings. It has happened before and I fixed problem using boot disk and going through safe mode and uncluttering my ram. Now when I can't get to safe mode.I'll enter it when highlighted but I just get a:prompt all over again. Working through the help file I was informed that command.com, extract.? and ?./?(my ?'s) could not be found. Do I have a corrupted boot disk. I tried it on two different ones so i tend to think not. I have been unusually active lately downloading often to desktop lots of info concerning our recent debacle. I have also since downloaded juno and realplayer. If i could get to safe mode , I would uninstall realplayer, move new files to a floppy or at least off the desktop, and uninstall juno all in that order(I have another ISP). Thoughts?Suggestions?

start the computer normally (without a boot diskette)... hold down the ctrl key during the memory count until you see the windows 98 startup menu. select safe mode.

Thanx...but I guess I didn't mention that I did try that and when I hit ENTER with the SAFE MODE line highlighted after about thirty seconds I got the Microsoft copyright info and then A:/prompt. I was able to go through the STEP-BY-STEP CONFIRMATION MODE but I am clueless here. Is there something in this mode I can try?

i just had the same problem on windows 2000 (i've had the problem in the past but a restart usu. fixes - but not this time) and resizing the icons and then resetting them worked for me too - i'd just like to say thanks for putting up your solution - cos i would never had thought of that and you just saved me hours of tearing my hair out. does anyone know what actually causes this? i recently installed a few microsoft security patches (!!!). prior to this it only happened while running adobe illustrator - but would fix itself when i quit out. i assumed it was a ram issue??

quit installing crap programs like juno and realplayer.. these scumbag companies will take over your computer and fuk you in the arse. when something is "FREE" it just means you dont pay with money but you pay with your privacy and with the stability of your pc.

I'm running off of Windows XP and I've tried this fix and it's not working for me, I have resently installed microsoft netsupport and then uninstalled it after I saw that my desktop icons have blue backrounds now. The blue backrounds are still there and to top it off dxdiag is telling me my 256 MB Gfx card has no memory. Any ideas?
