Question about 'Windows keeps forgetting simple settings, such as screen colors!'

I have a question about Windows keeps forgetting simple settings, such as screen colors!:

Okay, it's a little bit more complicated than the article. I tried what the article said, and it still doesn't work. My computer is stuck in 640x480 and 16 colors, and though I have tried REPEATEDLY to change it, Windows reboots and forgets that I changed the settings. This keeps happening. Windows keeps resetting everything and I can't understand why, but it's driving me insane! Help, please!

I think what it is is that when I tell it to reboot, it doesn't do it correctly. When it reboots for the color/res. it just goes to a black screen with gray lettering that says "Windows is rebooting", it doesn't actually boot up again. Though I still don't know what's causing it

I am having the same problem. Namely, W98 simply will not apply a color setting change from 16 to 256. After rebooting the color setting remains at 16. A few of us are having the same problem. Someone surely must have an answer for us.

Maybe your video cards are bad. I reloaded Windows and it works.

Hi Ted, I am having the same problem with my win98 section edition. I have tried over and over to change my color settings to 256 and it goes back to 16. Have you solved this problem? Please advise. Thank you, Mario

This normally happens when the drivers for your video card are not the correct ones. Have a look at them and make sure they are the correct ones for your graphics card. If they are not, go to the manufacturers site and get the right ones and install them.

maybe your video card doesnot support anything more than 16 color 640x480 or try reinstalling the video card, if it doesnot work try replacing your video card.

Hi Alyssa and fellow sufferers,
Did anyone work it out a definative answer to this, because my beast has developed
the same complaint!
I read through the forum replies and there seemed to be no clear cut solution - someone
suggested that it was the video drivers that were the wrong ones for the system but
I haven't changed them so why should they suddenly be the wrong ones?
Can you remember how your problem started (I have Windows 98)? I started my computer
and walked away, and when I came back it had switched itself off - the power light
was off. When I turned it on again it went into safe mode (come to think of it perhaps
the video driver was changed when it went into safe mode?). I turned it off again
and it started to open correctly but the display was stuck in 16 colours and 640
x 480 size. Whenever I go into settings \ display to change it, it gives me the following
message ...
"System Settings Change
You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect.
Do you want to restart your computer now? Y / N"

Maybe that is a clue, because - as I recall - when I changed display settings previously,
it would simply ask you something like "Do you like the settings? Y / N" and then
the settings were saved.

Getting desperate since I don't want to have to re-instal Windows!
Regards
Alan. Downunda

A Solution to stuck in 16 colors 640x480

Friends -

Richard had the answer to MY problem (this might not be everyones solution) in an
earlier posting he wrote ...

This normally happens when the drivers for your video card are not the correct ones.
Have a look at them and make sure they are the correct ones for your graphics card.
If they are not, go to the manufacturers site and get the right ones and install
them.

I went to start \ settings \ Control panel \ Display \ Settings \ Advanced \ Adapter
.... and hit the change button. From memory, I got a dialog box that asked me if
i wanted the system to search for the latest driver or if I wanted to specify one
myself. I chose the first option, after making sure that I had the "Product recovery
and diagnostics CD Rom" which came with the computer, in the drive.
The system chugged and whirred and said it was finished and would have to restart
and when it did - you beauty! - it was back on Hi-color 1800x600! What I think happened
was that when it went into "Safe Mode" I remember it saying that it only loaded the
minimum of drivers, so when I restarted from there I had lost my video driver.
If this doesn't solve your problem at least you can cross this off your list of possible
faults. Thanx Richard and all those who responded.
Cheers
Alan, Downunda

this could be cause by not having the correct grafix card installed check with control panel and systems that you have the right grafix card installed

I experienced the same problem. I tried re-installing the drivers from the maufacturers disk but got nowhere. After realizing that in safe mode the CD drives are disabled I copied the display drivers from the manufacturer’s disk to a new folder on the desktop. Went to start>run and typed in dxdiag.exe to see how DirectX was holding up. After clicking the ‘display’ tab, I was told that Direct3D acceleration was ‘not available’ and a note at the bottom said that a particular driver file had not been digitally signed(?). So I downloaded that file and replaced the original in the desktop folder with it. Then did the usual right-click My Computer>Properties>Device Manager, opened display adapters, properties on the driver inside, driver tab>Update Driver, etc. to let it find and install the drivers in the desktop folder. Although I was told that the drivers were now not the most appropriate, it fixed everything. But I still don’t understand why the Windows picture on boot-up looked like it was using all the colors but as soon as the desktop came up they had all been lost. Or how the file on the CD could have become corrupt, if it did. Frustrating isn’t the word.

The solution may be as simple as going to: start - run - msconfig

click advanced then click the vga box and hit ok.

I have just come out of this nightmare after four weeks. I reinstalled the driver support disk (ATI Rage in my case) and was then able to alter the setting to High Colour (16 bit) & 800 x 600 pixels. I hope it works for any of you who are still suffering.

It's been a month and no reply to this, but I'm still trying to get all the colours. Try: Start : Settings : Control Panel : Display : Web : then untick `Show web content on my active desktop' : Ok. Then go back into display again, and check the box, click ok. It might work, it might not. David.

There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with your hardware. It is a problem with the display drivers. I suggest you check in Device Manager if there are any duplicates present. If there are any conflicts, I suggest you remove them by following these steps: 1. Press F8 during Startup to access the Startup menu. Ignore any error messages that occur. 2. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu and press Enter. 3. Right-click My Computer icon on the Desktop. 4. Click Properties. 5. Click Device Manager. This would list the devices. 6. Check if there are any duplicates or for any confilcts. 7. Click on the Device and Click Remove. 8. Click OK. 9. Restart the system. Follow these steps to remove the duplicates for all the devices. If there is an Others category in the list, remove it. If the resolution does not change even after performing the above steps, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK. 2. Click the General tab, and then click Advanced. 3. Click to uncheck the checkbox VGA 640x480x16, click OK, and then click OK. 4. Restart your computer If the problem persists, visit the URL given for steps to troubleshoot video problems: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q127/1/39.ASP

Try two things... First, reboot and start windows in safe mode by pressing the F6
key repeatedly just as the first screen you see flips to the next screen. You may
have to try this several times to get the timing right.
Once you're in windows (in safe mode), right click on the "My Computer" icon and
choose "Properties". Next choose "Device Manager". Go down the list and click on
the "+" sign next to "Display Adapter". You may see your video card listed there.
Write down the name and then right click on it and choose "Remove". Now reboot and
if Win98 doesn't automatically install it, you now know what card to look for.

If that doesn't work then you may need to open up the computer and pull out the card.
Look carefully for any names and numbers that look familiar, then go by that name
and number when you try to install the correct driver. If your video card is built
into your motherboard this step may not be of much help.

Good Luck! :-)

I have the same problem as everyone else, except that when I go to to reinstall the driver, it tells me to insert the disk "Mach64 for Windows 95" but we have Windows 98! Help! I've tried everything you guys have told me, AND called the computer manufactuer, but they want a $30 fee to tell me how to fix it! Does anyone know what to do now?

Your problem may have been addressed in the installation instructions for the driver. Sometimes the older video cards use drivers that were designed for win95. So, the prompt for the "Mach64 for Win95 disc" maybe irrelevant. If it is prompting you for a disc, and you only have one, then you maybe missing a disc. Or, the files may have been extracted into two seperate locations on your computer. It all depends on what version, and where the drivers originated. To figure out the details for installing the drivers, reference the readme.txt or setup document that came with the drivers. If neither of the files exist, or you can not find them, then follow the instructions below. 1.) Download the most recent drivers for your video card. 2.) Read the instructions and the FAQ that comes with the drivers (look on webpage, or in the unpacked file) 3.) Uninstall\Remove your existing video card drivers 4.) Install the "Standard PCI Graphics Adaptor" driver 5.) Restart the PC and install the new drivers. Hopefully, this will fix your problem.

thank you, thank you, all! I have been struggling with this for months now and was to the point of taking the system in for troubleshooting and repair. This worked like a charm although I am still puzzled as to why the 'flip' occurred since I had not added or changed a thing. Great work!

I have the same problem, exactly exactly exactly, safe mode thing and everything- everything worked out except the solution. Why didn't it work if I'm having the same problem? And what if I don't have this CD Rom that you're talking about? Do I need it need it? Can I use any others, like my Windows CD? Still stuck in 16 colors here, for about two months. I need my colors back, I work in graphic design.

Truth to tell, it has been so long ago since I went through this that I can't remember exactly what I did! Nowadays I stay clear of Safe Mode like the plague! When my startup screen says I've got 30 seconds to chose whether I want to start in Safe Mode or not, I have Normal chosen within seconds! I get a warning that the graphics choices are wrong but the Display Control screen comes up straight away and I just have to chose my screen resolution and I am away. This doesn't help you right now though! All I can do is make some guesses and suggestionws and hope that someone with a bit more knowledge can jump in. Basically, your Video Card needs a "Driver", this is a software program that acts as an interface between your computer CPU (the box) and your monitor. This is what has been lost and now you need to get it back. - Try going through the motions - start \ settings \ Control panel \ Display \ Settings \ Advanced \ Adapter blah, blah as per the previous message, with your Windows CD in the CD Drive. Let the system search for the driver itself and perhaps it will find it on your setup disk. - Didn't work? Then it's not on there then and you will have to go searching for it. First of all you have to find out what Video driver you have in. Try going to ... start \ settings \ Control panel \ System properties \ Device manager \ ... under which you should have all the devices connected to your computer.Hopefully you can recognise your video card on this and if so Double click on it and you should get a popup with a Tab for Driver. What you really need to know though is WHAT IS THE MAKE AND MODEL OF YOUR VIDEO DRIVER? - If you know this already the next best bet is to search for a Driver on the Internet. Load the make and model into Google or whatever plus "Driver download". With any luck this should get you straight to the manufacturers Webpage where they will ussually have drivers for you to download. Hope this helps. My only other suggestion is to try booting your computer with your Rescue Disks in the Floppie Drive. I'm not sure but this might bring your settings back to what they were when you made the Rescue Disk. Best of luck! Alan

I did find something that may help some of you. If you have windows 98 first edition, then explore the cd. Look under Drivers/display/vga. Read the readme file and do as it says. Note: you can copy and paste the line that it says to add.

another solution to being stuck in 16 colours, 640*480res
Thursday, February 19, 2004 at 2:34 pm
Posted by Mike Hall (1 messages posted)

I tried the solution im replying to earlier on today, but it did not work. I spent 45 mins reinstalling win98 again from the cd over my old installation (without a format), and this had the effect of sorting it all out, (for some reason windows would not allow the memory ranges required by the graphics drivers, or any others i manually changed them to). Its now sorted completely, although this is a very time consuming solution.

My problem happen quite a while ago so I can't give anyone any specific information now. One thing I will advise though - DON'T LET IT GO INTO SAFE MODE! I now watch my start-up screen and if I get the choice screen Do you want to ... 1) Start normally 2) Start in Safe mode ... I make sure I hit the 1 quick smart! This invariably gets me a normal start in my normal screen with all colours BUT I get a warning screen asking me to confirm my display settings. Once i click ok I'm running as per normal. I think I have dropped into Safe mode once since but I closed down and rebooted (not sure if I just hit the power button) and when it re-started I chose 1 as above. prevention is better than cure, eh! I have also been having the same problem, except my video card is built into the motherboard. So now what do I do? Do I go to the motherbord website to see if I can get a driver from there? This problem is driving me crazy!!! Although one thing is a little different, I can get my resolution up to where I want it. I just can't get the colors over 256. (I want the 16 bit or true color options). As with some of the others who have posted, my problems started after reloading and reformatting, Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just went through this frustrating exercise as well. I have a name-brand system which I reformatted and loaded with a fresh copy of Windows, but not from the 'system restore' discs. I tried reloading the driver for the video monitor several times, using the 'search for' option with both of the original system discs. The search function wasn't able to find the driver files until I specified the full path to the driver files (ie, E:\Win98\Windows\Inf ) on the disc that had them on it. Once I provided the complete path to the driver files, Windows was finally able to find them. I also had to tell it where to look for some additional files it wanted under the ...\Cab directory (also on the original system discs). After these shenanigans, things were back to the usual choice of several color options and screen resolutions. Hope this helps someone - I lost about a day wrangling with this critter!

I just managed to fix this nasty problem in a way not exactly as described elsewhere, so just in case it helps anyone here's the short version (it took me a week): I upgraded from win95 to win98. The first time I used Win98 it was in 16 colours, with no explanation. If I set the colours back to 'high colour 16 bit', the system reset itself but came back up still in 16 colours. When I looked at 'settings' under 'display' it told me I had a Trident 3D video driver installed. When I let windows search for a driver it installed 'Standard VGA graphics adapter', which was even worse, as I now only had the option of 2 colours or 16 colours. I went back to 'display', clicked 'advanced', 'change' and then 'display a list of drivers in a specific location'. I re-selected the original driver from the list, the Trident 3d one. What followed baffled me, but it worked so I don't care! Windows tried to install each component of the driver, but couldn't find any of them. Luckily at each stage there was an option to 'skip this file'. So, esentially, I didn't install anything. Windows however seemed happy to give me all the colours back. It now thinks it has a trident driver, even though it surely can't have? All too much for me, I'm just glad it's back to normal. Thanks a lot to everyone else!

Get "Unstuck" With MINIMAL EFFORT!

THERE IS NO NEED TO REINSTALL WINDOWS 98 AT ALL! AND DEFINITELY NO NEED TO UNINSTALL ANYTHING. When this little mishap occurs it deletes the graphic cards drivers anyway. So really, trying to uninstall it will have no use whatsoever. SO, in my case, all I did was went to desktop, right click, properties, settings, advanced, adapter, and clicked change. Then it should do an auto search, and if you have the same problem as mine, it will find it on the internet and try to install the driver all over again, meaning u have to insert disks... however, just click skip through all the files and then you will have to reboot your computer in order for the changes to take place. IF THIS DOESNT WORK THEN MY NAME IS MUD!
