If you've changed your drive letters recently, that could be the problem. I had
a similar problem when I used Partition Magic to repartition my hard drive. If that's
the case, all you need to do is run the "Drive Mapper" and the drive letters will
be referred properly.
If this isn't what happened, sorry, I don't know what else to suggest

the file that windows is looking for is a virus file that has been removed (pws.hooker.trojan)-a
password stealing trojan. You need to find where in the registry or sys.ini/win.ini,
and stop it from loading.

I have just had the same problem erupt on my computer. I uninstall Nortons Systemworks
2002 several weeks ago because it was conflicting with another program I needed.
Then yesterday my computer just went tits up. It boots with several system.ini message
referring to Nortons and then ends with the cshook.vxd. The first time thru it shuts
down then the second it loads into safe mode only.
Is this the same error that everyone else is observing? It is very frustrating
especially when I needed the comp and it wasn't working. I have printed the other
workarounds posted, but are there any newer ones I need to look at?
Thanks in Advance

Click on start - go to run and type regedit - go to edit - click on find and type
cshook.vxd in [find what]
click find next - this will search for the file cshook.vxd. Highlight and delete
the file. Reboot workstation.
Have a nice day. You're very welcome.

This is a file (or files) from a program that you uninstalled or deleted, and is
still being called by Systen.ini, or the Registry. First open System.ini in Notepad
or with Sysedit, search for file name, and if you find it, delete entire line. If
it's not in System.ini then run Regedit, and find filename. Again delete line where
found, continue search with F3, till it says finished. close regedit, and you should
have no more error. Get rid of Nortons.... it would have to be one of the biggest
single problems on the web..... good luck.......

click run, enter regedit, type cshook.vxd, when the file name appears , click on
and delete....uninstall any non working programs and reinstall. This was no problem,,
but annoying.. mine was caused by a virus

This is your Norton Clean Sweep program. If you intententionally uninstalled Norton
Clean Sweep using Uninstall from "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel or using
the "Uninstall Clean Sweep" program, chances are something was missed during the
uninstall. If you did not intentionally uninstall Clean Sweep, then re-install.
So you can uninstall in 2 ways:
1. Reinstall using " Add/Remove Programs", and then uninstall again using " Add/Remove
Programs". If that solves the problem - great.
If Not:
2. Manual Uninstall:
Go to Symantec Home Page
Click on Norton Systems Works (Your Version)
Click on Clean Sweep
Type in CSHOOK.VXD
The instructions are clearly printed to uninstall
Clean Sweep.
Good Luck

Dave, super helpful. Solved my problem immediately.
I am not going to re-install NSS because I have consistantly had too many problems
with it. I am currently running two free programs as a temporary protection method
but would love input about good system maintenance programs as well as protection
programs. Using AVG and Zone Alarm, OS is Win 98se.
Thank you again!

Jeri...Glad to hear that it works...I used Norton for years ( NAV and System Works),
and migrated to NIS when I upgraded to Broadband from dial up. NIS was a disaster..had
to take it off. NAV didn't catch a virus that was messing my system up, so trier
a free download from McAfee for AV and it caught it. So I bought McAfee IS and that
too had its own set of problems...I recommend using Mcafee AV, and McvAfee FW, both
available as free 30 day downloads, the Privacy Service ( Pop -up blocker/cookies)
really doesn't work well and neither does there SPAM, so look to other sw providors
for those protections..

Hi Everyone,
I am also having this problem as well with the exact error msg on startup . I dont
have the earlier version of Norton and tried installing the latest but it still didnt
fix the missing file.
I am also having system crashes, error msgs, invalid shortcuts and problems opening
word etc. I have read this can be a symptom of registry damage due to spyware even
if removed. Any help would be VERY greatfully appreciated. Thanks
