Under monitors in the device manager I am showing my correct monitor and also a default monitor I have tried removing this monitor and also removed both monitors and reinstalled the correct one but when I boot up the next time windows finds an unknown device and installs the drivers for it (default monitor)I have a Nvidia MX 200 agp video and a P-lll 1G, in my directx folder it shows display 1 and display 2 which is the default monitor

Try booting into safe mode and removing the default monitor there and see if that doesn't keep it from coming back.

somewhere in the diplay properties there is an option to detect plug and play monitors. try unchecking it (and removing it from the device manager as curt suggested). if that doesn't do it, remove the correct monitor from the device manager and try updating the drivers for the default monitor to the correct drivers.

Does your video card support dual monitors? (ie does it have plugs on the back for two monitors)

I believe some dual-head cards always show 2 monitors in Display Properties whether they both exist or not, although I don't know if that applies to Device Mangler as well.

One more suggestion, if its not a dual monitor, have you checked in display properties, advance, monitor tab to see which monitor is listed if its unkown change it.

Go into display properties, settings, advanced, monitors, and select "change". Change "default" monitor to, "plug and play" monitor. Oh, be sure to go into safe mode first to remove all monitors, and let windows re-detect. Then change default to pnp.

I, too, am having the same problem, using an NVIDIA dual-monitor card, but Windows 98 SE detects and installs TWO extra default monitors besides the correct monitor that I manually installed. I think I've solved the problem -- under the properties tab for the default monitors, I checked Disable. My CD burner worked the next time I tried it, after crashing 11 times in mid-burn before I did that.

Hey, I have the same problem: windows is detecting two monitors when I only have one attached and i don't have dual display. I thought it was something I could solve in the device manager but nothing seemed to work. Then, I switched my os to XP pro AND switched my video card to a radeon 7000/VE (from a Geforce2 MX 100/200) but it still detected two monitors!! Mine is pretty old - maybe there is some kind of compatability problem with these monitors and newer versions of windows? Anyway now I'm told that I don't have access to all my tv-out settings because the imaginary monitor is taking its place in the display settings. -Any suggestions?

Hi I got a problem with my monitor as well. When I go to device manager, I couldn't see my "monitor" even when I look under the hidden list. Also, when I go to display properties and click advance, the box that came up has states " (Default Monitor ) and Properties ". Under the monitor tab, it states default monitor and I can't click on properties. The screen refresh rate is "use hardware default setting" and is unchangeable. Under the adapter tab, nothing is stated on the type and all adapter information are . When I click the properties on adapter type, I see VgaSave properties. My graphics card is Nvidia Geforce2 MX/MX 400. My monitor is LW-851, an LCD monitor but my winxp cant detect it. Neither can I find a driver from anywhere, not even under driversguide.com. This problem has been there for 3 wks! Pls help!

SOLVED.
This trick works with Nvidia driver 41.09 for a GeForce4 MX460 on an Abit KR7A motherboard
(VIA chipset) and Windows 98SE. You might find postings on the web that suggest to
uncheck "automatically detect plug and play monitors" in the monitor tab. DON'T DO
THAT. It's probably the best way to install two or three monitors in one go. If you
are reinstalling Windows or simply upgrading your Nvidia drivers, here's how to prevent
double or triple monitor issues.
1) Windows clean install: if a plug&play monitor is connected to your system, it's
often the first driver that windows will ask for after first boot. IGNORE IT (click
on cancel). You can satisfy Windows' request only when the installations of chipset
drivers and AGP card are complete (don't adjust resolution and color depth yet).
You will see that the Nvidia driver will change the "plug&play monitor" to "default
monitor". When you are satisfied with Nview settings, simply change the default monitor
to your model by installing the appropriate driver. Reboot. Adjust color depth and
resolution to your liking and reboot. Once again: DON'T CHANGE ANY OF THE MONITOR
OPTIONS IN THE MONITOR TAB.
2) Nvidia driver update: From the system applet in control panel remove your monitor.
Boot in safe mode to remove any hidden monitors that are not visible in normal mode
(monitors category in system - control panel). Delete any INF files pertaining to
your monitor from c:/windows/inf/other. Reboot. Click on cancel. Uninstall the Nvidia
driver (with the help of the "detonator destroyer" utility). Reboot. Reinstall the
Nvidia driver. Reboot. Let Windows install its "default monitor". Complete Nview
setup. Reboot. Change your monitor (driver: inf file + color profile on disc). Reboot.
Adjust display settings to your liking and don't alter any of the monitor options.
Note: nvidia driver 30.82 installs TWO monitors "by default"....my dvds had become
unplayable until when I reinstalled win98se and upgraded to driver 41.09.

I'VE FOUND the SOLUTION. Lim, everything you just described matches my had-been problem
precisely. I'm using a Windows XP with Nvidia Geforce2 MX/MX 400.

Guys, try this out. It might work. Certainly, it changed my default monitor back
to the correct one. Now I can once again lower the screen resolution to 800x600 without
"getting out of frequency." Ever since this problem I couldn't find the Monitor subheading
in Device Manager. Yes, even from Safe Mode. Yes, same as what Scott's having. Fortunately,
that's over thanks to this solution.

This started ever since updating my card with Windows Update. Unfortunately, System
Restore was no help. I warn you, never use Windows Update for driver updates. Instead,
find your driver's manufacture site and use that.

ANYWAYS, THIS IS MY SOLUTION:

I went to http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_53.03
(opens in a new window) for the latest version of my graphic
card.

Yes, it contains the software. But we can stop it from automatically loading by using
< Run...: "msconfig" > and going under tab < Startup >.. etc.

The package installed itself to C:\NVIDIA\Win2KXP\53.03 [well, it's v53.03 as of
now]. This is where the VGA controller is at, etc. Keep this in mind.

Time to knuckle down. Go to My Computer's < Properties > ; tab < Hardware > ; &,
button < Device Manager >.

Reveal the hidden devices by going to "View" -> "Show hidden devices."

Now skip to the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" sub-category and uninstall VgaSave. !
Do not restart yet !

Then skip to the "Display Adapters" sub-category and uninstall what's under there.
Trust me. ! Do restart as prompted !

After the restart, your Plug and Play will detect something called VGA Controller.
Do not tell it to search from a CD or the internet. Instead, tell it to install from
C:\NVIDIA\Win2KXP\53.03 [remember?] This should automatically install the VGA controller
and your graphic card. ! Do not check up on your default monitor with Display yet
!

Restart your computer.

After the restart, check up with "Display" -> "Settings."

  :)

I'm asking you a favor now. Ever since the driver update with Windows Update, there
was the "default monitor" problem and now, still the "I've-got-invisible-and-displaced-tabs-in-Display.Settings.Advance"
problem. LOL. But seriously, please... I need someone's advice. I don't want to re-format
my computer.

The default monitor is actually your TV (or other output target). Some of you may
have noticed Your display adapter occurs twice in Device Manager. The secondary again,
is for output display (s-video/composite).
In Display properties your primary may say your actual monitor or "multiple monitors"
this is fine annd will have not aderse affects (AFAIK).

I have only confirmed this with ATI Radeon cards, though I believe this is a windows
plus display adapter wit dual display issue.

re: How do I get rid of default monitor in device manager

I have the same problem. The problem does not lie simply in the fact that it is displayed in the device manager. It lies in the fact that if you connect a second display it will use the settings of the "default monitor" for it. For instance if you were to have a 19"crt as your primary, upon initial connection XP creates a default monitor for it in device manager prior to NVIDIA/ATI driver install. Once you install the proper drivers, it creates another device which will either be the name of your monitor or "plug and play". The "default monitor" you are seeing is not the s-video or second monitor connection but a remnant of the windows default driver for your primary display. Windows thinks they are both the same monitor. So lets say you then connect a second monitor. The NVIDIA driver now thinks the "default monitor" in device manager is your secondary display. In my case, the second display becomes blurry and has poor redraw because of this. Even if both monitors are identicaly, it will not work properly. It is especially apparent when they are not the same res. or they are different sizes/ aspect ratios. The key to solving this problem I unfortunately have not found. Even after a reformat it can get tricky. The order in which you install/restart for everything is very touchy. Once windows creates default drivers for your monitor, I have not found a way to remove them. The hidden device called "vgasave" has something to do with it, however uninstalling it doesn't help as it will reinstall after every other restart. This is because it still sees the need to install because the monitor is connected. What baffles me about this problem is that, in order for you to install drivers at all, windows needs to install a default monitor in order for you to see wtf u are doing. The baffling part is that I and many others have got dual and tri display to work many times before and that on other computers this "default monitor" isnt there at all. What was done differently I cannot say. Its possible the solution is right in front of my face, but I am so deeply buried in the problem I can't see it. Hopefully reiterating this whole thing will help some. I ask the web community to please help us out here. If you have dual display working let us know if you have a "default monitor" in your device manager or not. If you did once before and now you don't let us know how you removed it. This is even more frustrating for myself because this is only the first hurdle for me to overcome. I am currently dealing with the nightmare that is "SLI" right now. It was distributed very prematurely, and support right now is pretty much zero beyond that of online forums. Thanks in advance for the help anyone can provide us. Peace out.

I am not sure this is correct. I have the same problem too. I am using an ATI Alll IN WONDER with win 98se. I have 2 default monitor listings before my correct one in the device manager, but my display adapter is only listed once. This causes a problem it that I cannot set the refresh rate with the correct monitor in my display properties. I would like to use a higher refresh rate to make it easier on my eyes, but I cannot even change this because of this problem.

I had a very similar problem and discovered that, as suggested previously in this thread, it is all down to the detection of TV Outputs. If you go into the Tools tab of the Nvidia display sattings for your graphics card and uncheck the "Force TV Detection" tab then the ghost monitors will stop appearing in Hardware monitor. For the uninformed I am referring to specific display settings and not the dsesktop ones. In other words you can access this by right clicking on the desktop and left clicking 'Nvidia Display'. I hope this helps! John

I've installed new ATi drivers yesterday and couldnt get the proper resolutions for my monitors afterwards. I had 7 default monitors, 3 Sonys, and 3 KDS drivers in my device manager. I fixed it by simply updating the drivers on all 13 monitors until they were all Sony drivers which is my primary monitor. Got my resolutions back...no more problems. I couldnt uninstall any of them and this thread is absolutely useless but I got what i needed. Hope this helps some of you with XP Pro. gG

IMPORTANT THIS IS NORMAL Please if you have a graphic card with multiple monitor support you should not change this settings. Otherwise multiple monitor support will not function correctly. This is normal and is described under "New Device Enumeration for Intel® UMA White Paper" and doesn`t apply only to Microsoft Windows 98.
