Question about 'Stop Windows from Wildly Accessing your Hard Disk'

I have a question about Stop
Windows from Wildly Accessing your Hard Disk:
TechTV just posted an article about using the Swap File. They say it is not needed.
They then recommend that you should set the following variable in the SYSTEM.INI
file in the [386Enh] section called ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1
.
Any thoughts about this idea or information on what this actually does.

what it does is make the puter use ram instead of swap files it uses swap files less
but it will still use swap files as needed
you also need to change some more settings
to make this setting work or it will go spazo
cause the Vcache will be to hi if you have like 256mb ram then this will help but
if you only got like 64mb ram it will not help
have you disable findfast if you have ms office
just a question
add these lines in the system.ini then reboot
[vcache]
MinFileCache=0
MaxFileCache=16384
[386enh]
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
MinSPs=8
**** use a 4 above if you don't have 256mb ram
MinSPs=4 the default is 2
if you go to the microsoft support site you can do a search on all of these settings
also just type the word into yahoo you will be surpized at the matches found
With these sttings I am online with my normal line up and have 122MB of free ram
no swap file going
also it takes the load off the processor so the modem has more time to putt
the bigger the Vcache the processor time is burnt up updating the cache

After reading Microsofts post on ConservateSwapFileUsage=1, I do not recommend to
set it. What it does is to make Windows 98 behave like Windows 95, which is *probably*
not a good idea.

Yeah, it *SOUNDS* like it would not be a good idea, but, in fact, it IS a good idea.
I am not sure of the other settings, but I know that you do not HAVE to have them.
I have been using that line for quite sometime in my [386Enh] section of my System.ini
and it does wonders for the speed of programs. It accesses your hard disk MUCH less,
and with 256MB + of RAM that's definately a good thing!

I'm not sure if my problem is the same as the topic here but it's close I think.
I have an older computer that I mostly use for the internet some word processing
but mostly music. It has 320 mb of ram one 6 gig hard drive and one 10 gig hard drive.
I use ecdc 6 and cooledit for the music. To get ecdc 6 to work I had to upgrade to
win98se. Since I did this, everthing runs jerkily - cooledit and ecdc etc. So when
I try to record from my records etc. it's jerky and doesn't sound good. I have tried
the fixes posted here but they didn't help. When I turn my computer off and on its
better for a while but then it seems to get worse and worse. I have scansed with
mcafee, avg and spybot etc and all is clear no viruses or spyware. Nothing is working
for me Please help me. I'm not sure what settings I should use for vert mem and vcache
etc.???
