Question about 'When I choose

I have a question about When I choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, my computer hangs at the "Please Wait" screen:

Running Win98SE and having done a CLEAN install of the operating system, I began to load my programs. I can't remember exactly at which point it "broke" but the problem is this, and ONLY this: My system will NOT SHUT DOWN. I get an audible BEEP after the shutdown screen appears (Which just sits there). The beep is from the pc builtin speaker and may be an important clue. This is not the usual "hang" problem. I use the power switch now to turn it off. After having done this, I have checked the boot log and find that the system IS APPARENTLY TERMINATING OK, but I don't feel I should leave it this way.

If it hasn't been too long since this started shutdown and reboot into dos and type in scanreg/restore and when it displays dates choose one before the problem started.

Did you have the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement installed previously?

Gene: the beep sounds (no pun) like a clue. Disable your exit sound in Control Panel>Sound icon>Properties>click "Exit Windows Sound event">in the Name field, select "None". For more tweaks see my post to Rob at r1005615210 (use the QuickLink after your text below). I have also found that the shutdown is faster and smoother if you disable your firewall just before you click the Shutdown button.

Yes, I tried using the shutdown supplement to solve the problem after first trying all the other suggestions on the MS website.
