Question about 'Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection'
Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at 1:37 am
Posted by Niles (2 messages posted)

I have a question about Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection:

I just wrote a bunch of stuff but it was deleted, apparently filtered out due to a curse word... hey my main email address is niles@f*uckitall.com, anyway. I'm having the above problem. Here goes again...

The regedit fix seems a little fuzzy to me. My DriverDesc key has the value "3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX)" not "TCP/IP" When I make a new String Value there doesn't seem to be a decimal option either. So I made a new key MaxMTU with the data 1454 and still have the same problem of some sites working on the host but not the client. Any help would be appreciated. -Niles

Niles, niles, niles... I hate to say it but, your questions is a little vague. I'm not sure what why your regkey should be tcp/ip or what you are trying to accomplish. Maybe you could give us some more info. I'm sure I speak for most -since it is obvious that your question isn't getting answered. Get back with us....

i guess i was kinda vague there. basicly, these instructions: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107 on how to fix the MTU settings with regedit didn't work for me and i was wondering if there was a step missing or something. my problem is not being able to access some sites on the client machine that work fine on the host machine. the host machine is running Win2k ICS and the client machine is a 98se box. pinging the gateway like this PING -f -l 1500 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx gives me the fragmentation error. pinging the gateway like this: PING -f -l 1454 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx works fine. so i think the problem does lie in the MTU settings, but i don't know how to fix it. -Niles 0On Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at 8:08 am, jamesbondleft wrote:

Goto regedit and look for this key...HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\netTrans\ then look through all keys example...(0001, 0002, etc.) until you find the key that says Driverdesc "TcpIp" and make a new string like in the article you were referring to and set the value to "1454" or lower...this should work it worked for us.... This nifty little piece of work will change the MTU setting for you from a menu-driven form -- no need to REGEDIT if you're not comfortable with it. SvG

"Thirds" are usually overkill, but I have been struggling with this for months! All fixed. "Nettrans" not "net. Happy camper.

Thanks everyone I was going crazy with this problem. A few questions though - the problem appeared out of the blue - my netwrok functioned fine for over a year without the problem - what could have triggered it? Under nettrans I found several numbers with tcp/IP I changed the MTU value to max for all of them - could this have any negative effect? thanks Ski

Niles , I hope you're still tracking this as I have found a solution to your problem. The instructions written at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107 are indeed incorrect. The correct registry path is as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0000 The exact path may vary but just do a search for tcp/ip and include maxMTU=1454 in every branch with a matching string.. cheers, ptolemy

Had the same problem. Hate doing the registry entries manualy. A little program called "Tweakmaster" saved my life (www.tweakmaster.com). You can download an evaluation copy. You pick the MTU value and it does it all for you. Hope it helps.

Hi guys, I realise this is the 98 section, sorry but just wanted to check if any of you had resolved this for XP. I used this fix for XP, which was really helpful. It works for the admin user but not if you log in as any of the other limited a/c users on the machine. ´"Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ Tcpip\ Parameters\ Interfaces. " Any ideas, cheers.

Two Mistakes!
Thursday, September 30, 2004 at 5:51 pm
Posted by Howard Russell (2 messages posted)

The source article is wrong on two points:

As ptolemy wrote, the correct Win98 registry path is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Class \ NetTrans \ 000x
The article also specifies that a string value should be used. This is incorrect. It needs to be a decimal DWORD value.

If someone could update the source article, these posts would all become moot.

Now enjoying a fully functioning client,
Howard
