Question about 'Replace the Ugly Startup and Shutdown Screens'

I have a question about Replace the Ugly Startup and Shutdown Screens:

Be aware that if there is a winboot.ini file in your root dir, which has the same content as the msdos.sys, win 98se looks first for the winboot.ini file. So if you change the msdos.sys nothing will happen. I found out. Regards, Bob

This is true --- I found this as a speedup tip, sometime ago, on another site.
I routinely use this file, as I would the msdos.sys file.

So, the question becomes, why have two files processing the same lines, if windows
first processes the winboot.ini file?

Supposedly, you don't even need the msdos.sys file, BUT, I believe certain programs
DO check for it's existence -- so, I simply rem'd out my msdos.sys file lines.
No problems, everything runs just fine.

Does this actually save time on bootup? Supposedly.
It's just one of those built in things that I chose to
take advantage of and it doesn't hurt anything.

Whatever lines you place in the msdos.sys file can be
safely used in the winboot.ini file.

Of course, you MUST BE VERY CAREFUL in editing either one of these and know what
you're doing....

Larry, I believe that the msdos.sys file is not even adressed once the winboot.ini file is found. Maybe it is a leftover from win95 for compatability (msdos) reasons. Actually I was looking for a solution how to get rid of the biosbootup screens. Have you maybe a suggestion? regards, Bob

You're correct; however, I submit it is safer to leave msdos.sys on the system (rem'd
out of course), if you wish to keep and use the winboot.ini file. There ARE programs
that look for mysdos.sys.

The bootup screens you refer to, I'm assuming, are the various logo splash screens
(i.e. Dell), and other
companies use. If this is what you're referring to, often, there will be an option
in your BIOS setup to enable/disable this (on Dell systems, I believe, there should
be an option for Quiet Boot or Quick Boot, that enables/disables this).

Hope this helps.
