Question about 'Why can't I start Windows when I boot from a floppy?'

I have a question about Why can't I start Windows when I boot from a floppy?:

Problem 1: My other computer will not start... It gets to the windows 98 screen when you first start the computer. After that a blue screen pops up with a statis bar in the bottom of the screen, it reads searching for some files... After that a box pops up in the middle of the screen. It says it has fixed the problem and push enter to restart the computer.. Than is endlessly repeats itself. Problem 2: I put in my floppy disk of WIN98. I search for my SYS, C:, and all that. It says that there is a missing parameitor (sp) What does that mean? Question: Could somebody please help me? My email is s0meeb0dyy@hotmail.com the 0's are zeros just so you don't mistake them. Thank you! :)

It's difficult to tell exactly what you are saying here, but one thing that I noticed is that you put "I search for my SYS, C:". I assume that what you mean is that you tried to run 'sys c:' (notice no comma) on the machine. If you get to see the splash screen, then that is not the problem. You should include some more details, then we might know what the blue screen is, or what files are missing. What you have done is a bit like taking a car into a garage with a problem and not saying what the problem is other than it doesn't run.

sounds like a problem with the registry...

Virus maybe?
When it tells you it is searching for files, what files?

Chell: Determine if an AV program is running by pressing the Esc key during startup to close the Windows logo screen. If an AV program is running, you may be able to control the AV program from this screen. Choose the option that prevents the pause from occurring when you start Windows. If no AV program is running, continue to the next step. Disable the Windows logo screen. To do so, add the following line to the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file: Logo=0 For additional information about how to edit the Msdos.sys file, click the QuickLink after your text below. If still no joy see the troubleshooting article Q188867 (use QuickLink below).

My comp is doing almost the same thing. After I rebooted one night, after the Win98 logo was displayed and it would normally show the desktop, and start loading anything under the STARTUP section. It flashed an all blue screen with a little grey/white box. There was no writing or anything at all. Then it reboots into safe mode and cannot detect my mouse, modem or cd-rom. I cannot figure out why this is happening. These are the system specs: Dell Dimension 500 (P3 500MHz) 26GB HD 128MB SDRAM (single DIMM) Win98 SE Direct X 8.1 MS Office XP IE 5 Mozilla 1.4b nVidia TNT2 32MB AGP Yamaha DX Sound Altec Lansing Speakers/Subwoofer US Robotics 56KB Modem MS Intellipoint mouse Dell MS Natural Keyboard I hope this helps, please let me know if you need more info. I also tryed booting from the startup disk, but it didn't work - especially now that it thinks there is no CD-ROM! Sincerely; D. LaMana zenbaby@dmv.com --------------

Dino: let's start with three possible fixes...

without the mouse you will have to rely on the keyboard, so we will use the DOS prompt
for the following procedures.

fix #1. based on "Computer Hangs After Windows Logo Is Displayed at Startup" and
the data in the link below after your text;

determine if an antivirus program is running by pressing the ESC key during startup
to close the Windows logo screen.

disable the Windows logo screen;
boot using Ctrl or F8 key to Command Prompt Only
and the type at the prompt: edit msdos.sys
and press the Enter key

add the following line to the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file:

Logo=0

and while you are there, add these:

BootSafe=0
BootGUI=1
BootWin=1

each on its own line.
then save (/fs), reboot (ctrl+alt+del) and try a normal boot.

fix #2. (if needed);
try a System Restore;
boot to the Startup menu,
select "Command Prompt Only",
type: scanreg /restore
and press the Enter key,
select a date before the "troubles".
exit and reboot.

fix #3 (if needed) (courtesy of JmC);
boot with a Win98 boot disk and at the A:\> prompt type: SYSTEM C:
and press Enter.
wait for the files to copy, then remove the floppy
and reboot.

let us know if more is needed,
and let us know what worked for you...

GREAT! Thanks, I'll try this ASAP. I don't an AV program running though. I'll let you know what comes of it. In the meantime, I opened the case and cleaned the case and made sure all the connections hadn't come loose. Thanks again! Dean

OK, I tried editing the msdos.sys file. All I get is "cannot edit read-only file". Is there a way around this? I tried copying it, changing the lines and renaming the altered file to the same name, but that didn't work. I tried deleting it and it said "could not find file". Thank you in advance for you help! Dean

Dino: the read-only attribute protects your system files, but you can turn it off
so that you can make changes;

at the DOS prompt, type: attrib -r -h c:\msdos.sys
and press the Enter key.
where r = read only
and   h = hidden
and note the spacing.

later, when the changes are made, restore the protection:
type: attrib +r +h c:\msdos.sys
and press the Enter key.

OK, I tried that exactly as you typed it and got the following message "Not resetting system file C:\MSDOS.SYS" I tried just using one of the switches, but that didn't work either. Seems my system wants to stay broken eh?! Dean

Dino: your computer is teaching me a lesson!

i forgot to include the system attribute...

type: attrib -r -h -s c:\msdos.sys

and after all changes made:

type: attrib +r +h +s c:\msdos.sys

Hello, I started having trouble similar to those in this string when I started my computer one day and received an Invalid System Disk error. I have since been able to get it to boot to a command prompt. I know that the msdos.sys file is corrupt and have seen instructions on correcting it but cannot get past the read only attribute. I also have received the message Not resetting hidden file c:\msdos.sys. I have tried the attrib -r -h -s msdos.sys and also tried to fix it through msdos editor. Any more ideas on getting it out of read-only mode? I saw the note about scanreg/restore and will give that a try. Thank you for any help you can give. I'd still really like to know for my own edification how to get past that read-only attribute when in dos. Thanks! Natasha

Restored Registry
Sunday, May 1, 2005 at 9:43 am

My system (Win98) would freeze in the black screen following the logo screen (which helps to show if the system freezes on boot). I restored the registry from around the last known good boot and we're back in action. THANKS EVERYONE!
