Question about 'What to do about error messages during Windows startup'

I have a question about What to do about error messages during Windows startup:

Upon Windows 98 start up I get the error message:Exshell caused an invalid page fault in module Exshell.exe at 017f:0040e74d. A few days before I downloaded Internet Explorer 6 from Microsoft website. Could this be the cause of the problem or is it something more sinister like a virus? I checked the Microsoft database for any reference to Exshell and came up empty.

I think ExShell has someting to do with Excite Software. Do you have any AT&T @Home or Excite software on your computer?

I get the same error message at startup and do have Excite software on my computer. It never used to do this, though. Now it does it every time at startup.

Exshell is Excite@home software that puts the ExcitePlatform Icon in the tray next to the clock. It's located in "C\programfiles\Excite\Platform\Exshell.exe" After loading the Cox software ( takes over from Excite) I started getting the same error message. Cox puts a CorrectConnect Icon in tray that performs simular but more extensive function and the ExcitePlatform is apparently no longer used. To get rid of the error message I went to Start>Run>msconfig>Startup and unchecked EXCITE PLATFORM and restarted. Things now working normally, no more error message. Dave

Dave, I read your message and tried it on my home computer with no luck. My new cable provider is Adelphia. I was on a business trip for a month and when I got back Adelphia had sent a letter stating that they were going to new cable modems (eliminated the Excite@home cable modem). Before I picked up my new modem, I had on my Dell computer screen the same message you got "Exshell - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down...". I talked to Adelphia, Microsoft, and Dell about how to delete Exshell and got no information on how to do it, i.e., they all passed the buck on that it was not there problem. I tried your "Start>Run> but when I get to Run it says to "Type the name of a program, folder, document, or internet resources, and Window will open it for you". No matter what I enter it says it can not find the files. Therefore, have you heard of some other way to delete Exshell or am I not doing something right? For example, would deleting all software from the computer and reloading only what I need solve the problem? Thanks

When you go to Start>Run>type in "msconfig" >OK> then select the Start Up Tab. Look for the Excite Platform entry and uncheck the box. Click OK and restart computer. Dave

I delete the file all together, what's going to happen. My question is why do I need it? Thank you in advance

As far as I know you don't need it. In my case the file was uninstalled by new ISP software (Cox) but it left the entry in the msconfig Start up. When starting up, Windows was looking for the file because of the start up entry, couldn't find it, then gave me the error message. It was just easier (safer) to uncheck it than fool with the registry. A later @home software uninstall from Cox seemed to clean everything up and the entry is no longer in the msconfig Start Up Dave
