Hi Dan -
Do you have DX8 installed? One possibility could be that your display driver is
not compatible with DX8.
Check to see if you have a current display driver (that supports DX8) if, in fact,
you're using dx8. Go to your card manufacturers web site to check.

I, too, am getting this Error message and it is the most annoying thing. I have a
Radeon 7000 64 MB DDR Video CArd and it has always worked before. I Checked the Website
for compatibility - and from what I understand - it should support this version of
DX8. I have even tried redownloading and installing the software - yet to no avail.
Are there any patches or anything else that may help? And am I right in assuming
that Ddhelp means "Direct Draw Help"? Please clarify anything you might be able to
- i would greatly appreciate it. Pallida_Amour@Yahoo.com

I have done some research on this topic, and I notice that this error only applies
when you have Windows 98 or 98SE. Would upgrading to 2000 or XP solve this issue?
My shipment of Windows 2000 comes next week. But if anyone know the likely outcome
before I even have to upgrade my OS, please let me know. And if windows 2000 or xp
does solve this problem, I will let you guys know as one possible (but perhaps expensive)
solution.

Try to uninstall your m/b sound driver if you have China motherboard like Matsonic,
Acorp and so on
with AS97 sound onboard, and then install newest driver for your board.

I may have had a similar problem, with an error message coming up every time I tried
to play a video. I saw on another message board that you could fix it by going to
your sound card's options and turning the playback accelerator all the way down.
I dont know why this worked but it did.

I toop get a similar error. However it only appears when I go into the game Medieval
Total War. The mouse appears to freeze and the game crashes back to the desktop
with the message Ddhelp has caused an error in . I cannoit then do anything
graphic related (fiddling with display settings causes a Rundll32 error). I have
not yet tried the triubleshooting advice on this page but will be doing - hopefully
then I can stop tearing my hair out.

I had the same problem.
I have a computer with Windows 98se and a Nvidia GForce FX 5700 Ultra Video Card.
I recently upgraded the video drivers from Version 61.76 to 71.84. See "http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_71.84.html".
When I rebooted my computer, it hung at the desktop for about 20 seconds, then continued
OK. I rebooted again and when it hung I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL and noticed the "ddhelp"
process was not responding.
I removed the 71.84 video drivers and reinstalled the 61.76 ones and now everything
works fine. See "http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_61.76.html". Bottom line...
since "ddhelp" is a required part of DirectX, check your video drivers or contact
your video card manufacture.
I hope this helps.
