2 win98se, 1 xp home w/ router network wizard issue

I'm having networking problems with my network involving an XP Home system, and 2
win98SE systems. I want to file and print share between all three, and share the
net through a router connected to a cable modem. The XP connects fine to ONE of
the win98SE's (lets call it A) and that computer connects fine with the XP. They
both can use the net and mail. However, the other win98SE (lets call it B) can only
communicate with the other one (A). The two win98's connect fine with each other.
However B cannot connect with XP and XP cannot connect with B. It could connect
to the net but now it can't. Something funny is going on and I think it has to do
with the windows XP network wizard I've run (repeatedly) on it. Now, pinging it
from other computer is not successful. However it can still network to the other
98se. It also receives an ip from the router (via DHCP) fine. Any one familiar
with what changes the windows xp wizard has done that has won't allow pinging or
connection to the internet? I would like every computer to connect with each other,
but would be satisfied if I could restore this system so that it can access the internet
again. I've played around with using just TCP/IP, and TCP/IP w/ NETBUI and it's
not getting me anywhere. If anyone is knowledgeable in the I would love some assistance,
I've wrestled with this problem for too long now, and can't find any info on the
web with this.

I had a somewhat similar problem the other week with 3 Win98SE networked computers
when I connected a standalone print server to the network. I might also add that
a few weeks ago I lost my ability to do Internet Connection Sharing, too! Try running
winipcfg, and compare the numbers on the computer in question to those that are working
properly, and see if your subnet mask and IP addresses are weird. If so, you can
release all of these addresses and request that all of them be renewed. This worked
for us, so why not give it a try if you otherwise cannot get it going?

I have pretty much the same problem, I have a medium sized network with about 6 XP
machines and like 11 Win98se machines, a few XP Machines will connect quickly to
other XP/Win98se machines, while on the other hand, a few windows 98 computers get
an error when I try to connect to an XP machine something about "not accesible".
I Installed TPX/SPX protocols on the XP and 98 computers and it didn't help at all,
but then I installed NetBeui on the Win98 OS and after rebooting it could connect
to the XP computers. Seems like each one has a mind of it's own though. But I think
the NetBeui on Windows 98 solved my problem to access XP computers(some of them atleast).
Anyways the bigger problem I'm having is that when I try to connect to Win98 from
Win XP it takes forever to copy a simple file, it even takes awhile before the folders
show up and the file begins to copy. I read somewhere in this forum that you have
to give each computer running on Win98 a network password instead of leaving it blank,
due to Windows XP's high security settings and it doesn't allow blank passwords.
I haven't tried that yet but I hope it works, and if anyone else has had the same
problem please let me know if you find a solution for this? It's driving me crazy,
BTW if I made any weird typos don't worry I'm just pretty darn tired and half asleep
;) Oh yeah, by the way, all computers are sharing folders, they show up on the network
but they're all wacky, 2 win98 wouldn't connect to an XP comp Until I installed NetBeui
on the 2 Windows 98 stations, then I reboot and they could access XP, but with XP
accessing windows 98 it's real sluggish, but only on some computers :(
Sorry for the long message but I hope this helps some of u that had this problem
and hope someone with more knowledge helps me hehe, I saw something about editing
registry keys on the Microsoft Support page but not sure if that's the problem I'm
having so I'd rather not mess with it
thx

You need to not use NetBeui. Remove the NetBeui.
Remove all network settings on all machines. Start from scratch using an XP machine
to and recreating the workgroup using the network connection wizard. Make sure you
make the bootable network setup disk for the Win98 machines on your system. Finish
all the other machines and make sure they can see each other (shares). Now start
with one Win98 machine at a time using the disk and each additional one make sure
you can see all machines all directions.
Lastly, scrap all the above plans and convert one of your machines to a Win2k server
that does nothing but authenticate machines and users in a simple domain. With
that many machines on your network, you should not be using a workgroup.
Then, remove all Win98 machines from your network or upgrade to Win2K at least.
NO NETBEUI.
GOod luck:)

I had similar problems on two seperate LAN's. Turned out that the computer NAMES
on the Win98 computers (right click network neighborhood, select properties...identification...computer
name) had spaces in them. While this doesn't seem to bother Win98, WinXP can't handle
it. It might find the computer and even ask for a pasword, but would not respond
in any way if one was entered. On one computer, the name was changed from Duron
1200 to duron12...problem solved! On the other, the name "pentium4 " had a space
AFTER it that one could not see in the computer name window. On a hunch, I renamed
it to "pentium4" (no space)...Problem solved! Give it a try. Good Luck!

Did you check windows XP connection to make sure the personal firewall is disabled?
(right click on the connection from viewing it, properties > advanced > uncheck)
It will stop communication from another computer to it on a workgroup. The 98 naming
of the computer for the workgroup is also another thing to check.

Windows Firewall on XP machine is not an issue. Make sure all computers belong to
the same Workgroup (ie Workgroup). Check if your getting an IP address (ie.192.168.1.100
on both machines (check to make sure router is serving IP addresses ok)). Do this
on 98 machines by typing winipcfg (and ipconfig on XP). In winipcfg window make sure
the drop down menu does not say PPP click on drop down menu and select your nic card.
If you cannot see your nic card make sure you can see it in Device Manager. Then
try removing the TCP/IP Protocol and TCP/IP adapter from network neighbourhood, restart
machine then re-add TCP/IP protocol connect via DHCP, NETBEUI Protocol will not stop
network from working this allows you to see your own machine and others in the workgroup
this is ok to be installed. You should now see a valid IP like the one above. I
have successfully networked XP to WIN98SE with ADSL Router serving DHCP leases to
both machines and connecting to the web.
