Question about 'Share an Internet Connection'

I have a question about Share
an Internet Connection:
I have been having problems recently with ICS "breaking". We have a simple network
at home which works very well. However, the client machine occasionally "loses" it's
connection to the via the host. We have recently reformatted both machines with a
clean install of Win98SE to try to solve this problem, which on this occasion solved
nothing.
I recently fixed this last impasse by setting the IP's on both machines manually
(192.168.0.n) and pointing DNS on my machine (the client) to the host machine as
well as the DNS IP of my ISP. I also set the gateway to point to the host machine.
This all appears to be a convultuted way of getting ICS running as I don't recall
it being this hard to get on with when we first started using Win98SE. I'd like to
be able to find a resource (possibly URL) that will show me how ICS works which will
help me best troubleshoot it when it does "break".
TIA for any tips.
Phil

I have used ICS but it was always "breaking" down. I tried the Proxy server method,
also with problems. I am now using a "Sharer" box that has always been reliable,
and dosen't require a host machine running, to allow it to work. If you would like
more info drop a line here on the forum. I also found that the connect speeds were
far better, but REMEMBER that each added same time user slows down the whole thing.
ie: 2 @56.6= 28.8 approx
3@ 56.6= 14.4 approx.

Thanks for the tip! I am using dial-up here, but the principles are the same.

Thanks Andrew! I'd like some more info on this if possible.

I posted a reply yesterday but it appears it didn't show up. I have used ICS with
problems, then tried the Proxy server method, which was not so great. I now use
a sharer box with great success, and with what appears to be a faster overall connect
speed. Just remember that each same time used slows down the connection. ie: 2
@ 56.6=28.8 approx., @56.6=14.4 approx. Andrew

I have had something quite similar. all i tried was to release and renew from the
winipcfg command, this seemed to get me back working when I did this on the client
pcs. I am using a 3 pc setup with phoneline adapters for internet sharing and am
using MS ICS.
