Hi Lenny - See this article helps, if you don't have poledit installed:http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/delnethd.htm

Before you make any registry changes, back it up FIRST.

Getting rid of Network Neihborhood icon

Larry - Thanks for your reply and attempt to help, but --- I looked at the article you to which you referred me. The first suggestion tells me to open the "Registry Editor". How? The second suggestion is to use poledit, which I don't have. The third suggestion is to open the "local Registry". How? And you tell me to "back it up" before making any registry changes. Back up what and how?

Hi Lenny -
Since you mentioned that you did not have a windows cd, I referred you to that article
in case you did not have poledit already installed.

Any time that you decide to manually make ANY changes to your system registry, IT
IS ALWAYS important to make a backup -- even the simplest of errors could cause major
problems. To do so, just
Start>run>scanregw and OK when prompted.

In the article, disregard the info on poledit -- towards the middle of the page,
there is a registry hack for changing the registry value. That's what I was referencing.

Perhaps it might be safer to get hold of an installation cd and go with poledit as
mentioned in first reply.

You can try using MS Tweakui....

The desktop tab of Tweakui can also remove the network neighborhood icon (plus, it has other features). You can download it here: Tweakui

make sure you cursor can go at the start of the next line -- rule of reg files

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Hi Vernon I created the file nohood.reg according to your instructions. When I double clicked on it I got a message that it was not a registry file, or something like that. However I have already been able to delete my Network Neighborhood icon from my desk top by a procedure whch Larry sent me in several messages, and which I have summarized below for the benefit of others who may want to use it. Summarizing what Larry sent me in several messages: Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/powertoys/networking/nttweakui.asp Download Tweakui to any directory. Go to the directory to which you downloaded it and double click on tweakui.exe. It will create several files. Right click on the file ending in .inf Select install. Close popup window in top right corner of your screen, if necessary You can now delete the 3 or 4 files created by tweakui.exe Go to your control panel Click on the tweak icon Uncheck "network neighborhood"

Did you use note pad... Most of the other program do not save it as true text...They
leave hiden tags.... I use notepad to merge stuff all the time...
I don't like using tweak program..
Just a few words of advise about TweakUI
I prefer keeping a list of changes that have been made.. And TweakUI doesn't work
correctly on a multi user platform...

Merry Christmas

Yes. I used notepad to write the file. I wasn't sure if I should include the REGEDIT 4 line, so I tried it with and without. Apparently neither one worked since I got the same error message about it not being a registry file. Thanks for your tips about TWEAK. However I don't have a multiple user platform so that is no problem. Unless you mean an AOL account with several screen names. Is that a multiple user platform? But I will add this precaution if I send the procedure to friends. And not sure what the problem is about keeping a list of changes. Couldn't find your email address to write you privately. I assume you know how to find mine. It is lenedith@bigfoot.com. I am in Freeport, Bahamas for the winter.

I exported the key out of my registry
you can do some playing
go start run type in regedit hit ok
navigate to the branch (if you used tweak it should be there already)
then on the tools go export and save the branch
after you save close regedit and find the file
right click on it and pick edit this will be an example for you to see

when you copied did the long line end up on one line there should be only three lines

REGEDIT4
****has to be a blank line here****
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\----------
"NoNetHood"------------------
<*** make sure you cursor is blinking by the <

What I mean for multi-users is you can have different profiles on the computer....
when you set up the puter with a logon screen you are then using a profile...

Why I keep a list of changes is so I can change things back if I want to
you can read my notes there is allot of info about profiles and links to microsoft
support

and if you got an email it should have only been from the response from here that
