Hi Whitney -
Try this, in Windows Explorer:
Go to \Windows \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Quick Launch
Rename the Shortcuts, placing a number in front of them.
(If you have more than 10 shortcuts, keep in mind that 11 will come before 2!)
Hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem in XP. It rearranges the icons. There doesn't even
seem to be a particular order(like alphabetical or by date). In fact, each time
I start Windows, it's different. It kept it's order in 98&se. I got rather used
to it remembering. I like to keep everything I regularly use in quicklaunch, but
with 20+ icons moving around on their own, some of the convenience is lost.

Yes! someone else has this problem. they seem to shift over by one icon each time
I reboot. re-arranging them the way I like is pointless. I too have like 25 items
and here's the wierdest part. there is ALWAYS ONE MISSING! it's like a torture
invented by some evil-doer. sometimes the desktop button is missing, sometimes it's
Paint Shop Pro, I have found no real hard set pattern. it's ridiculous.

I have the same problem with XP: icons rearanging themselves like they have an own
opinion. But what's even more irritating, is that the width of the quick launch bar
is pre-defined. I adjust it to f.e. 6 icons, but when I reboot, the width of the
bar is automatically reset to 12 icons! Utmost irritating.
Well, luckily I didn't pay for my copy of XP, otherwise I would file a lawsuit agains

I have same problem - seems so stupid - also, if you renumber your short cuts (as
someone suggested) the numbers show up in the start menu and with other shortcuts.
STOOOPID. Love to hear of a real fix for this.

Try this:
Go to the directory C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR LOGON NAME]\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet

on your quick launch bar. This is for XP. Hope that works for you.

Well, I tried that last fix that I posted and found out that it didn't work. Sorry
people. However, it did start bugging me quite a bit, so I DID finally figure out
the fix. Use Regedit (or your favorite reg program) to go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and change NoSaveSettings to 00 00 00 00. Restart your computer, put the icons in
the order that you want them to be in, then restart again. This time the icons should
remain in the order you placed them. Hope this one works for everyone.

Sounds great, Dr. Rabbit, but there is no "NOSAVESETTINGS" to change. Why isn't
there a NoSaveSettings? There is just a default and something else about drives
in Windows98 SE!

I will expand the problem with 'icons rearrangement' by adding new details.
After applied Disk Defragmenter in Win2k/SP3, and rebooted, the following happened:
1. Icons moved into three columns on the edge of the Desktop
2. Appeared 'Getting Started with Windows 2000'
3. Mouse (MS IntelliPoint 3.2) pointer speed reset to default
4. Folder Options: 'General', 'View' values reset to default
So, I repositioned icons on the Desktop
(as it was previously),
changed several parameters in Folder Options,
increased speed of the mouse by two points,
unchecked 'Show the Screen at Startup',
and, additionally, in the Registry, changed 'AutoArrange'
(wherever was found) from 0x01 to 0x00.
After rebooted the machine, exactly the same happened as explained in 1-4 above.
System totally has overwritten all changes
that I made.
Plus, in the Registry, 'AutoArrange' returned to 01.
I played this game several times in a row, but result was exactly the same (as explained)
every single time.
By the way, I tried NoSaveSettings (there are entries
under Windows NT), but without any efects.
Thanks in advance for any help to resolve the problems.

Yes, this worked for me too.
You can make the change automatically like this.
I can't upload files here so start and new text file in some text editor (e.g. notepad)
and paste the following text:
---- Start COPY below this line ----
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=hex:00,00,00,00
---- End COPY above this line ----
Save this file as NoSaveSettings.reg, navigate to the file and double-click on it.
This will update your registry with the correct value.
Logout and login again, and you should see the effect.
I still don't know what changed this value (maybe an anti-spyware program), I if
you figure it out, please post it.
Enjoy,
Adi

At the website: http://www.geocities.com/thestarman3/tool/FreeTools.html
there is a free program to download called Desktop Icon (Position)
Saver. I created a directory in C:\Programs called Desktop_Icon_Saver
and unzipped all contents there. Place shortcuts to IconSaver.exe and
RestoreIcons.exe in your startup directory. Arrange your desktop icons
the way you want and run SaveIcons.exe. After rebooting, your icons
should be where you want.
Putting RestoreIcons.exe in the startup directory eliminates the need
for manually running the .exe after rebooting. Is there a "Shut Down"
directory that will run programs at shut down? If so, placing a shortcut
to SaveIcons.exe in it would eliminate the need for manually saving the
icon positions.

I have a partial work-around. I have about 20 shortcuts in my Quick launch folder.
Now I use some of these links very frequently and others less so. So I created a
new folder within the Quick launch directory and put the less-frequently used links
there.
I then numbered the remaining dozen or so shortcuts. I didn't number the items I
wanted to be first displayed along the taskbar and the remaining numbered links remain
in their numerical order shortcut on the taskbar. I noticed that the un-numbered
links still didn't remember their order but as it is only 4 shortcuts I can live
with that.
Cheers

I've had a similar problem for months that I have been searching for a fix for. I'm
running Win 2K and every time I rebooted, my Quick Launch bar disappeared. I would
put it back and it would disappear again. I've just tried the Registry fix above.
My NoSaveSettings entry was set to 01 00 00 00. I changed it to 00 00 00 00. It worked!!!!!
Thanks to all who contributed. Hope this helps others!

Which update this little bugger comes with I am not sure.
But the fix is,,,,,,,,,
"UNLOCK" the tool bar before you make any changes , then you can relock it , & reboot
(or log out , then in), & you should be golden.

I have not noticed this problem, but that may only be because I use XP Pro. I think
if it allows you, locking the taskbar may solve your problem. Just pull the bar that
resizes the taskbar so that all your icons are visable. Then right-click on the taskbar
and click "Lock the Taskbar". I would love to know if this worked for you.

Well, if this helps in any way, I didn't have this problem before (XP Pro) until
I accidentally hit the g*dda*n "Sort by Name" item from the Quick Launch Bar context
menu. I did not have my bar locked and my icons were always in the order I left them.
Then I hit that f*c&ing menu and now I cannot sort them the way I want to, the "sort
by name" crap is undoable and as a prior post said there is always one icon missing,
lol.....

I keep the desktop toolbar on the taskbar and I had the same problems as everyone
else. After reading all these posts and trying everything, here is what worked for
me.
I have included specific instructions for those not used to editing their registry.
I rebooted my system several times before posting, and it's worked for me on XP Pro.
I have not tried it on my XP Home system yet. I apologize for the length, but it
is thorough.
Step 1:
Use Regedit (Go to Start then Run, type regedit and click ok) When it opens, there
are 2 colums. In the left column - click the plus signs next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
and then scroll down and click the plus sign next to each folder in the following
list:
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Policies
Explorer
Then look in the right column and you will see a lines of text with headings on the
top that say Name, Type and Data.
Find the one that says NoSaveSettings.
Double click in the name colum on NoSaveSetting.
Another window will open that says Value Name and Value Data.
In the Value Data box type 00 (zero's not o's) and click OK.
The NoSaveSettings will now have 00,00,00,00 OR 0x00000000 (0) in the Data column.
Immediately, before you close anything, or click on anything else - go to the top
of the window and click File (up in the bar at the top of the window) and then click
export.
A window will open.
The top line will say Save In, make sure you either navagate by using the browse
button, to a location like Desktop or My Documents that you can easily find again
OR be certain you write down the folder it is saving it in.
At the bottom of that window it will say File Name, name the file something you can
remember like Icon Placement.
In the section at the bottom that says Export Range, leave the dot in the circle
next to Selected Branch"
When you're all done, click save.
Close the Registry Editor
Step 2:
Go to the Icon Placement file you saved in Step 1 and double click on it.
A window will open that asks if you want to add the information to the registry,
click Yes.
Another window may open after that (Sorry, I forget if it does), if so, click Yes
or OK.
Step 3:
Restart your computer.
Step 4:
Re-arrange your icons.
Step 5:
Restart your computer (yes, again... sorry!)
Step 6:
Do NOT use the Lock Task Bar option.
Step 7:
Be happy! You have tamed the wild Microsoft Rampant ReArrange Monster!

sort files by Name. This works for me :)

re: Question about 'Why don't items in my Quick Launch remember their position?'

I had the same problem with XP and sure enough, Dori's solution worked for me. Because
I have two kids, I use system restore all the time, and after a year or so of restoring
about once a week, I noticed my icons getting jumbled in quick launch after a restore
starup. Then it recently started happening on every reboot, which was really frustrating.
I do also have a couple anti-spyware programs going, so between the antispyware
and the system restores, something blew away the NoSaveSettings item in the registry.
I re-created it and as Dori insturcted, locked it in the registry by importing it
to a file. I did find that I CAN lock my taskbar, if I anticipate how the last item
in a row will jump down and compensate for that.
Thanks, Dori.

This does not seem to be connected to any particular operating system. The crux of
the problem is found at
in RegEdit at
User>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion
>Policies>Explorer
Change NoSaveSettings to 00 00 00 00. Restart your computer, put the icons in the
order that you want them to be in, then restart again. This time the icons should
remain in the order you placed them.

to they way I like but the next time I reboot they re-order themselves again. How
do I stop this?

OK, guys, seems that I have finally found (thanks to suggestions found in this thread)
a solution for my particular problem which is somehow connected to the Quick Launch
Bar icons' sorting order.
My problem was that sometimes, at very rare occasions, the icons on the QLB were
loosing their sorting order which was very upsetting as I usually have 4 full-screen-wide
lines of them groupped by area using a separator in form of a blank/empty icon. It
usually took me quite a long time to return to the previous sorting some 150 icons.
Today^H^H^H^H^H Tonight I finally found a way how to save the sorting order of the
QLB icons for later restore in case of wreckage.
0. I presume that generally your QLB works as designed and I presume that more or
less you understand what you are doing in Windows
Saving the QLB look
====================
1. Arrange the icons
2. Open the RegEdit
3. Export to QLB_OK.reg file the following Registry branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop
4. Wait for havoc which for sure will happen later or sooner
Restoring the QLB look
=======================
5. Load the QLB_OK.reg file into the Registry (use "regedit.exe QLB_OK.reg" from
a command line or just doubleclick the .reg file in the Windows Explorer)
6. Very important step - without it the saved sorting order will not be loaded!!!
And if you do it wrong you may have a little trouble - open the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del
- click Task Manager), open the Processes tab, start typing explorer.exe, check if
proper task has been chosen, klick End Process button, confirm the operation - don't
close the Task Menager yet, click File menu, chose New Task, type explorer.exe and
click OK.
7. Enjoy! :-)

Aha, to be on the safe side just repeat steps 2 and 3 using different filename after
you discover the icons were shuffled and before the step 5.

OK, version 1.1 of the procedure:
0. I presume that generally your QLB works as designed and I presume that more or
less you understand what you are doing in Windows
Saving the QLB look
====================
1. Arrange the icons in the QLB
2. Click Start button, then chose Turn Off Computer, press and hold Shift key on
the keyboard, click Restart (this saves the settings of the Desktop), release Shift
3. Open the RegEdit
4. Export to QLB_OK.reg file the following Registry branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop
5. Wait for havoc which for sure will happen later or sooner
Restoring the QLB look
=======================
6. Open the RegEdit
7. Export to QLB_Bad.reg file the following Registry branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop
- just in case
8. Load the QLB_OK.reg file into the Registry (use "regedit.exe QLB_OK.reg" from
a command line or just doubleclick the .reg file in the Windows Explorer)
9. Very important step - without it the saved sorting order will not be loaded!!!
And if you do it wrong you may have a little trouble - open the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del
- click Task Manager), open the Processes tab, start typing explorer.exe, check if
proper task has been chosen, klick End Process button, confirm the operation - don't
close the Task Menager yet, click File menu, chose New Task, type explorer.exe and
click OK.
10. Enjoy! :-)
