If you want to stop some programs from running when you boot up in Windows 98 (haven't
tried this in any other OS), click on Start, then Run and type msconfig. Go to the
startup tab and take out only the programs that YOU KNOW don't need to run for Windows
to function.
I took out real player, aim, morpheus, musicmatch because those don't need to run
when I boot up. I also hate a system tray that is a foot long.

freebie Resource Kit Sampler re: Question about 'Customize the Tray'

FYI,
tray.exe is well replaced by QuikTray in the Resource Kit Sampler
on the Win98 and Win98 SE CD at \tools\reskit\setup.exe.
So this is a freebie.
This freebie also contains several useful utilities--
ClipTray, Microsoft File Information, WinDiff, plus
the 1,766-page book in searchable format.
After setup, look in
Start--Programs--Windows 98 Resource Kit--Tools Management Console
(aka Microsoft Mangement Console (MMC)).
The Resource Kit Tools Help provides how-to, the same help as MMC.
(In short, after installation execution
you click on the icon in the tray for QuikTray dialog boxes.)
Surprisingly, Annoyances Search returned no docs for
"resource kit" or "reskit" or "quiktray" or variations,
so I hope this is helpful.
Thank you Tom for the good lead about using msconfig--startup tab.
Thank you Annoyances.
Dale, I hope this is useful.

Dear Dale,
Thank you for letting us know about this useful but--in my opinion--hidden resource,
namely the "Win98 Resource Toolkit".
I tried (briefly; I have a very short attention span) to use the Quicktray item,
and accessed its help menu for instruction, but I don't see how to use it to get
rid of tray icons. The specific one I want to get rid of is the "Task Scheduler"
icon. I need Task Scheduler to continue running in the background so that Norton
Antivirus' auto-updater will function, but I don't want yet another unsightly icon
in my system tray. Can you help? Thank you.

I am trying to find this functionality also for a windows 95 machine. If anyone can
find it please let us know. I know you can check the registry and the startup folder,
as well as msconfig on a 98 system, but are those your only choices for picking particular
icons not to appear in the tray?

I have been using and felt everything to do with controlling the quick launch is
right on the computer itself in customize notifications dialogue box right? it works
for me, I got rid of the little yellow icon or whatever and other stuff too.
