Question about 'How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes'

I have a question about How
do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes:
My explorer.exe seems to have crashed, and I need to know if and how I can get my
taskbar and desk top back w/o losing the info on my hard drive. I am running windows
98. The explorer error is as follows:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at 015f:00401f31.

After I close this error, my desk top graphics appear, but no icons or task bar.
If I hit control+alt+delete, the close program box comes up, but there are no programs
running so all I can do is restart or shutdown.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem???
Thanks.

I got W. Explorer crash very often... sometimes after de closing it, the system continues
to work propery, except that some tray applications dissapear, others, i have to
shut down (manually) my PC. YO never said if this crash happend only once or if it
is a constant problem. I wonder if this is not a W98 problem instead of a virus.

I have a virus protection program installed, with the latest updates, and my system
is virus free.
But, I am having the same problem with windows explorer crashing under win98SE.
Quite annoying, to say the least.

Hello, I recently had the same thing happen to me with win98, an explorer error on
startup. I could not even start iin safe mode. I had to dump everything and reinstall.
Glad I have a second drive to store info. Most annoying, will look for future posts
for a solution.

when explorer crashes, and you lose the desktop and taskbar....
if you have got any programs running (like media player or notepad etc...),
1.) go to file/open/
2.) choose a file to open by pressing shift and right clicking ,(any file, eg. a
text file), and select "OPEN WITH"
3.) choose explorer from the list. Explorer should now load back up.
this usually works for me.

noticed that you guys are getting the same error messages i was.. the "invalid page
fault in module explorer.exe at 015f:00401f31" i have managed to resolve the problem
without reinstalling.. there are two fixes.. (one of which worked for me) if you
have a monster fusion video card.. you need to rename c:\windows\system\comctl32.dll
to comtl32.old and run extract c:\windows\options\cabs /a win98_22.cab comctl32.dll
/l c:\windows\system (basically extracting a new version of comctl32.dll from the
cab files) or if you dont have a monster fusion video card.. follow this link...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q175930 (which basically
tells you to follow the same procedure but with the shdocvw.dll file) this resolved
my problem!

Hello--
A client brought her computer in with the exact error message that is being discussed
here. Rather than extracting files and renaming files, I just booted with the startup
floppy and then reinstalled Win98. Enter the key # and you can walk away, come back
in 30 minutes or so and, at least in my case, be greeted by a computer running properly.
Might not work in every instance, but it has a couple of times now for me. Good luck!

I've just had this problem and found that the following works:-
Open up in safe mode and go into start>run>scanreg /restore
Restore from the closest date. When the program has run your computer should restart
with all the desktop icons back intact.

Hi,
When you say you reinstalled Win98, do you mean you will have to reinstall all the
other software once this is done?

No, I just use the Win98 upgrade CD and the boot floppy. The programs should be fine
as is. You just want to reapair the IE & operating system files.

Thanks! When I boot with the boot disk, I am unable to detect my hard drive. Any
idea what I should do? The system warns me saying I either have a virus or undetected
partition. My HDD is 20GB, no partitions.

Have you done an fdisk to check on the status of your partition? Boot to the a:\
prompt with the boot floppy and then enter:fdisk and the press enter. Take option
4, to see information on your hard drive. Make sure it is listed as an Active partition.
If not, go back to the menu and make it active. Also, make sure it is listed as a
dos partition and not a non-dos partition. If it is listed as active and dos partition,
you might have a problem. Exit the fdisk and at the a:\ prompt, enter: sys /c and
press enter. Does anything happen? Let me know what info fdisk provides you concerning
the hard drive.
Good luck!

Mine is listed as Active non-DOS partition. What do I do to make it a DOS partition?
Also, the command sys /c didn't work.

If it is an active non-dos partition, it usually indicates the use of "disk-overlay"
software (such as MaxBlast) when the drive was formatted. THis occurs when you you
install a hard drive that is larger than the computer's BIOS can support. Most retail
replacement hard drives ship with EZ BIOS or some other form of overlay software.
Have you replaced the original hard drive with a new drive since purchasing the machine?
Unfortunately, you usually will have to delete the non-dos partition and then create
a new dos partition. THis destroys the data on the drive. I don't think PowerQuest's
Partition Magic software can change non-dos to dos in a non-destructive manner.
You could go to powerquest.com and then e-mail them, asking about safe non-dos to
dos formatting using Partition Magic. Otherwise, back up what you can and bite the
bullet and reformat. One last thing: At boot up, watch the monitor closely. Look
for something to the effect of "EZ BIOS now starting". If you see this or something
similar, let me know. You may still have an out. Good luck!

Yes! I see the EZ BIOS startup messages in the beginning. Also, I have a secondary
hard drive (6GB capacity) in addition to the master (20GB), the secondary disk is
partitioned 2GB each into 3 partitions (this is the hard drive from old system I
used to have). I wonder if still have a chance make my primary non-dos partition
as dos partition. If this is not possible what can be my future problems if continue
the status quo? Can you please suggest some external backup utility/software where
I can put all of my data into the secondary hard drive (with or without compression)
and reformat the primary to start all over again.
Thank you so much, I appreciate all your help.

Hello,
I think you can get out of this one since you have EZ BIOS. Here's what you do:
1. Have your Win98 boot disk handy, along with your Win 98 cd;
2. Boot the computer. As soon as you see the message "EZ BIOS starting" (or words
to that effect), IMMEDIATEDLY press the Ctrl key on your keyboard. If you perform
this operation at the right time, you will get a message asking you to insert the
boot(system) floppy. Put in the boot floppy & press enter. Take option 1 (Boot with
CD support) and when you get to the a:\ prompt, change to the drive letter that your
CD drive has been assigned. Then put in the Win 98 CD and enter "setup" (no quotation
marks). This should allow you to reinstall Win98. Just follow the prompts.
3. If you don't press Ctrl at JUST the right time, you won't get the prompt to insert
the boot disk. So, turn it off and reboot, trying again. When Starting EZ BIOS appears,
press Ctrl. Sometimes, if you press it too soon, it won't work. Likewise, if you
are a fraction of a second too slow, it won't give you the correct prompt. Keep trying
until you get the Insert boot disk (or system disk or however it will be phrased).
Until you've done this procedure many times, it is easy to mis-time the operation
and get frustrated. Keep at it. You will be able to get in, to get around the overlay
software, as it were.
Let me know what happens. I'll think about the rest of your question but right now

Yes! It worked!! I got to the EZBIOS colorful menu in one shot and could access
the C drive and reinstall the OS. All are going good so far...Let me see how Mr.
Gates evolves!
Thank you so much, you are great!!

Glad it worked out for you. If it hadn't, the next step was to get your hands on
the largest sledge hammer you could find and have at it!

This board has been so helpful and I am grateful to have so many suggestions to read.
So last night I reinstalled windows 98 using the upgrade disc. Everything went
smoothly UNTIL the computer was restarted. I then got the message "Unable to initialize
the scan engine" in the box labelled PCCIOMON. So now I am wondering if anyone
can tell me how to get my scan engine initialized. I do know how to use DOS pretty
well. Thanks
Chris

Hello,
I wouldn't recommend removing the Win98 "Windows" folder from the command line. You
will delete your registry, so you will have to reinstall all your data, programs,
drivers... I'd use a Win98se upgrade CD and install it over the current Windows OS.
You will preserve all your data and settings this way. Good luck!

I had no desktop on a compaq presario (not mine) after running spybot SD on a Win
98 machine. No Desktop, Icons or Start menu. It would give me: explorer has generated
errors and will shut down (roughly this msg. or similar) I used the suggested fix
of using win 98 upgrade disk -starting with a bootdisk - and this worked perfectly.
I luckily had an upgrade disk - but if you dont and are desperate -try ebay. This
fixed worked great - seemed to save all the data on the machine - Thanks a Bunch-
this forum saved me (or actually my sisters PC!!)

Same problem ... problem appeared right after deleting some programs in Add/Remove
Programs. This is an old thread but ... fixed it by booting with boot diskette,
getting an A:prompt, then C:\Windows\Command\ScanReg/Restore. Selected the 3rd choice.

I have had this problem twice now and only thing I could do was reinstall windows,
so this tip will be brilliant if this happens again. I got problems after installing
a lexmark printer, anyone else had this?
