Question about 'Troubleshooting Driver Problems'

I have a question about Troubleshooting
Driver Problems:
I recently upgraded from Windows 95 to 98, and from Explorer 3.0 to 5.0, then began
getting ilegal operations message during startup, and the computer always wanted
me to put in the Win98 CD to find the proper display driver. A friend said I needed
a new video card, so he installed a new PCI 8mb video card and it appeared to work
a few times. Now, suddenly Windows boots up to a low resolution 16-bit color display,
and when I go to change the settings, it only allows 2-color or 16-color as my options.
My SVGA monitor is several years old, but my friend says Windows 98 will detect
any monitor. What am I doing wrong?

The monitor's not the problem ,
You need to (re)install the drivers for the new video
card.
This will give you the expanded color options you
are looking for.

That's not to say that there isn't something else
going on that is causing this.
The answer I gave above is the pat answer to that
general question.
What make is the new card ?
did you check in device manager (control panel) to
see if the old video card is being shown in there
and if there are any conflicts with the new one...??
If the old one is still being shown there , you will have
to remove it from the listing.
Post back with a few more details if you could.

I wouldn't be quite so quick to dismiss the monitor as not the problem. Is the correct
monitor identified in Device Manager and what is it?

That did it. In my Win.ini file, I found the path on the original video card setup
pointed to WIN95Setup.EXE (should have been WIN98Setup.EXE). I re-set-up using the
Win98Setup.EXE, and everything works now.
Thanks.

We are having the same problem with not being able to display 256 colors, only having
the 2-bit and 16 bit option. Everything was fine until my husband installed a video
card that didn't work on our computer. We reinstalled the drivers but that didn't
work so just uninstalled the whole video card and took it back to the store. We set
the settings back to the old video card but are having the same problem with having
no 256 color option. I looked in the Win.ini file but not sure where the problem
would be.
Please help.
Thanks,
Shelley

I had the same problem. When you reformat you loase all drive files. All I did to
fix this problem was reinstall the drivers using the CD driver disk that came with
my computer.

Same problem here. I have a computer that definately has SVGA, the OS broke, so
I reformatted, and reinstalled win98 and it gives only 16 colors and I cannot change
resolution. I wish someone would give us a clue what to do.

I had the same problem before. I upgrated from 95 to 98 and lost the 32-bit true
color. I found out the correct driver for my integrated video card (it is also called
Graphics Adaptor) and got it from the manufacturer's site and problem solved.

I have a similar problem with the resolution and colour settings. I just reinstalled
win98SE from scratch and found that the only screen settings was 16 and 2 bit and
640 x 480 pixels. I have nvidia riva tnt installed and it appears in the device
manager. Do you have any tips that could solve this problem
Thankyou.

I had the same problem. I downloaded and installed the correct, updated graphics
driver (in this case, for an intel 3d agp chipset) and it worked fine after that.
