Page-fault with the COMCTL32.DLL file

When I run an application, an error occurs every time it opens a list box, and attempts
to create a list of parameters or files. A message box appears, and indicates that
some application caused a failure with the COMCTL32 dynamic link library. I tried
to re-install an older version of COMCTL32, and update Windows using the "Windows
Update", as Michael recommended. The error remains.
Does anyone know in what way COMCTL32 and list boxes (for parameters or files) are
related, in other words why this specific incident occurs ?

Comctl32.dll is Windows Common Controls. It's what Windows uses to generate Dialog
Boxes, List boxes etc. If a single application is creating your problem I'd check
the vendors web site. They may want a specific version of the dll.

Most applications cause this error, when attempting to create a list of parameters
in a list box, even Outlook Express.

Hey fellas I have a much more serious problem that i've been researching for sometime
now. It involves WinXP crashing with a reference to comctl32.dll. It crashes when
i use OE6, IE6, and Windows explorer. It will even crash when I boot up referencing
this file comctl32.dll. I cannot use OE at all. I'm walking on eggshells using windows
explorer. All my hardware is XP compatible on microsoft HCL website. I have all windows
udpates installed. Does anyone know anything more details about this issue, because
sometimes XP goes into a crash loop?

I solved this problem by downloading and unzipping a good copy from www.dll-files,com
(free) renaming it, and copying it to the windows/system directory. I then rebooted
and used CTRL to enter command prompt only, went to windows/system, made sure both
the original and renamed files were there, deleted comctl32.dll and renamed the unzipped
file as comctl32.dll. I had to do it this way because it wouldn't let me write over
it. Good Luck. The Ace

N Chase,
I was really stuck while working on a customer's computer. I was attempting a reinstall
of Windows ME in order to fix a sound problem and the reinstall crashed due to a
problem with comctl32.dll. I found a version of this file and copied it into the
Windows\System directory, but the reinstall still crashed. Then I ran across your
post and went to www.dll-files.com. I downloaded comctl32.dll from this site and
was able to complete the reinstallation of Windows ME (which fixed the sound problem,
by the way). Since the customer didn't have the Windows ME disk, and since I'm not
working out of shop and had no version of ME available, I would have been WAY up
a creek with no paddle! I just wanted to thank you for the information you provided.
That site (www.dll-files.com) was a life saver!
