Question about 'Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection'

I have a question about Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection:

This solution is nice to solve the internet-access problem via LAN->Server->DSL for the Win98 clients, but... It slows down the transmission rate for shared directories from ~0.75MB/s to ~0.13MB/s on our network (10Megabit). I have some Linux-clients where I can make the same setting, but only for the internet-connections. Local connections still work with some (higher?) default MTU. Since both types of connections use TCP/IP, the same "socket", I don't know how to make Win98 use different MTU for local/internet -connections. does anybody know ?
