Question about 'What to Throw Away'

I have a question about What
to Throw Away:
I went into my Windows\Temp folder and arranged the icons by date to check the earliest
and latest, to make sure I didn't delete anything that was created since the last
time I booted up (about an hour ago). To my surprise, there wasn't a single file
in there that was dated after November, 2001. Is this normal? I thought files were
created into this folder all the time. I used to leave my computer on all the time,
but hard drive errors when booting up (which I later attributed to a faulty IDE cable)
caused me to shut down every night. Rather than delete these files, I have moved
them to a new folder, to await a definitive answer on this.

You can almost (99.9%) always keep that folder empty. If your computer is running
normal - those files you moved can be deleted. I seldom have anything appear there.

I've heard that also, that to be on the safe side, keep the files with the latest
date. It's hard to say when, or why those temp files end up there. It isn't an ongoing
thing though. You can go for quite awile without one showing up there. Some may be
necessary for a recently downloaded or installed program. This doesn't mean that
you need to keep the latest around until another one shows up.

That suggests your machine has been running pretty well
since November.Normally files in C:\Windows\Temp will clear themselves out at
the end of a session. However, files created during the current session are probably
still being used. The main exception to this is when you do an install which requires
a reboot. In this scenario, the files will be used during the reboot, and then cleared
out. However, if your machine crashes, temp files probably won't be deleted properly,
and you'll need to delete them manually. Short answer - you can delete them.

WebPoolFileFile can be deleted...but it will REAPPEAR on the next boot (soft or cold).....
....delete it by exiting to real DOS (not drop-to-dos).....
BUT, ...it'll reappear on the next boot, which suggests it's written into the Registery..(someone
who knows more about Registry, pls search for it)...
...i'm REAL suspicious of this file file because:...it has no extension (to indicate
what type it is>it's NOT a text file)....it is not "read-only" attribute, yet it
can't be deleted....
...name suggests it has something to do with internet....somebody went to a lot of
trouble to make it un-deletable......
so, is this another of BillG's spy pgms...like the one that reports back what music
you play? (pls copy responses to my email)...lou

re:'What to Throw Away'..WebPoolFIleFile is McAfee Viruscan..,but:....

several posts on vnunet tag WebPoolFile to Viruscan 4.0-up.....and this file indeed
disappears if you close Viruscan & VShield (in the taskbar)....
BUT:.....it's also associated with MS-IE......i have another PC with ONLY Netscape
installed (IE is removed totally), and WebPoolFile is NOT on this PC....
it probably has to do with McAfee's shift to online scanning, which is done ONLY
thru IE (verified with McAfee).....
McAfee should at least id this file as theirs in the "properties", and give it an
extension...send them an email about it....lou

This does have to do with McAfee Virus Scan.
Its called the on-access virus scanner. AKA:
McAfee's internet "upgrade-o-spy" software.
It "upgrades automatically" your software.
Good for the novice, bad for everyone.
To get rid of this service:
Windows 2000
1. Open "folder" \WINNT\TEMP
2. Right-click McAfee virus icon on the bottom
of your screen. Shut it down.
3. You'll notice the "webpoolfilefile" disappear.
4. Create a text file and rename it to
"webpoolfilefile". Right-click and remove ownership
system and make it read only.
5. Restart McAfee virus scan & you're set.
OK Have phun!
2600
Chris Giguere
Exit McAfee Virus scan

It is a McAfee file used to grab data for pop up ads. Their is a way to delete it,
but I have been doing other things. I have to go and look at my notes and then I
can send them to you or post.
