I have a question about Getting Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to work with PPPoE:

every time i install ICS from the 98se cd. i lose my connection with the internet in the gateway computer. the only way i can reconnect, is to uninstall ICS. i have adsl via a usb modem. my network works ok. but i never get to test the client computer because the gateway computer cant connect. please help.

PPPoE with ADSL is an alternative to ICS. ICS causes the host PC to act as a DHCP server for the client. PPPoE over ADSL allows each node to connect independantly without DHCP. The ADSL router is the place to setup additional nodes -- although with PPPoE you may have to pay an extra fee for the second node.

I am having the same problem - I did have ICS working at one time but it is not working now. In fact, I can't get my pc to connect using IE even without ICS turned on. I think I'll have to try re-installing win98se, have you tried another solution?

The previous answer is absolutely correct. A little bit of info on a workaround may be helpful though. If you have a little knowledge on networking you should have no problem setting up an easy-to-use software proxy on the host machine, and forget the ICS. I recommend proxy+ (it works fine for me). All you have to do is to install it, and set up a basic forwarding from the local intranet addresses to the internet. Of course if you have a larger local network you should consider using a router/modem or a standalone router pc. But for a home network with 2 pc's it's a good solution. Ahh, and if you want to forward more than ports 80,110,25, it may be a bit harder to set up...but for the 'basic' internet usage it's easy to set up.
