Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel 32.dll
Sunday, February 10, 2002 at 10:38 pm Posted by Richard
(1 messages posted)
When I close down Windows Explorer I get the following message, “Explorer caused
an invalid page fault in module Kernel 32.dll at 016f:bft7b9f6”.
This has been happening for some time now and only happens when I close down Windows
explorer, thou not every time. Afterwards I cannot shut down the computer as it freezes
and need to press the reset button to reboot.
I have reinstalled windows 98 SE on top of my existing windows 98SE but to no avail.

explorer, along with other programs can cause an error in kernel32.dll on my cpu.
I cannot download any thing from the internet, most of my programs will not open
although i have found loopholes. For instance unless i open internet options in control
panel, i cannot get on the net. i also cannot install programs on my computer and
if they do install i can't open them. please respond if you have any solutions to
this problem!!

Max: no one should have to put up with all of that.
first, do a full system anti-virus scan (if you can), and
next, get yourself away from your present configuration by restoring to an earlier
time when all was well;
use Ctrl or F8 key to boot to DOS(Command Prompt Only)
type: scanreg /restore
press the Enter key
pick a date before the "troubles"
exit and reboot
if that doesn't work, it will be time for a clean reinstall...post back this page
if info is needed on that.

Have any of you guys tried deleting your user password files. They are the ones with
the *.pwl extension and are found in the C:\windows directory. There are at least
2 Microsoft articles which talk about this. They are Q154092 and Q187965. I hope
this doesn't come too late to help you. Good luck. Xaind.

I was having some trouble as well with kernel32.dll, explorer kept causing errors
in kernel32.dll. To fix it I just renamed the hidden folder in windows named "APPLOG"
to something different, like "APPLOG2" - not sure if this will help any of you guys..
all it does is recreate the files, which fixes any damaged ones.

This renaming of the applog directory fixed the problem for me, thank you!!!
I had tried all of these steps below with no luck:
reinstall 98se over the top
delete all pwls
reduce graphics acceleration to 0%
use no virtual memory
disable all file performance options
oy!
The error message would appear just after startup, and when a particular app was
run, so it was easy to test if the change had fixed it...

Hi,
After renaming the "Applog" folder to "Applog2" are you supposed to change it back
after restarting the computer, can you delete the applog2 folder after a new applog
has been created? Any help would great :) Thanks!

Hi,
Since I get this error during the startup of My Computer, I cannot rename
applog. In trying to use the command prompt, since applog is a hidden
directory, the rename command does not find it....so how do I rename it
in this case?
I did delete all files in applog and it didn't fix the problem. Any assistance
is greatly appreciated.

Caroline,
I also wanted to thank you for this. I am a technical support rep and had never seen
this. I had a machine that I was working on that had been stolen and returned in
somewhat less than perfect condition. It was getting a fatal error at bootup. After
troubleshooting that, I got the explorer/kernel32.dll error. I was ready to try the
pwl file route until I saw your post. This fixed it first thing. I will certainly
remember this trick. :) Thanks again.

I was also having severe problems with kernel32.DLL, i thried all the possible solutions
listed on this page but none worked, in fact it made it worse, to the point where
i couldnt even get windows to start. So i done a full restore and then downloaded
IE6 (was using IE4) and the problem is completely cured, i have visited sites which
previously caused my PC to crash and show the error message, but since loading on
IE6, the problem has not arose in 3 weeks. (I'm using windows 98)

Basically go to the windows folder and click on tools/show hidden folders (if thats
not it then keep looking along the top -- i no longer have windows ME or 98 so I
cannot remember) then rename the APPLOG folder to something different.

If that does not work then please visit this page http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;187965

Wow, I was getting invalid page faults with win98 explorer, and half the time starting

memory. Just changing APPLOG to APPLOG2 made life beautiful again. Geez, with the
high number of responders I am sure this solution will have a noticable impact on
the Gross Domestic Product. Can't thank you enough, Caroline.

I have a similar problem. Kernel32.dll nad Invalid Page fault when opening Internet
Explorer. 0187:bff7a138. I've attempted the renaming of the APPLOG folder but it
doesn't work. Tried a few other suggestion like deleting .pwl files and reducing
graphics accelerater. Hope someone has another idea?

I have been dealing with this problem for a few weeks now and finally came across
this message board. I can not thank you enough. I run a business from my computer
and thought I would have to shut down for a while until I could afford a new computer.
This has saved me a TON of time, hassle, and money. Thank you so, so much! Microsoft
should hire you since obviously their army of tech experts can't even help.

Last night a window entitled Wtoolsa appeared after I had been online using Internet
Explorer and now it comes up every 10-20 seconds, no matter how many times I close
it. "Details" revealed "module kernel 32.dll", so I tried that in Internet Explorer
and found this site. Saw your repair suggestions, Ryan, and tried it, but when I
got to Remove I didn't see a Repair option and was afraid to remove my IE. Can you
clarify? I have windows 98 and have done the most recent updates for my computer.
Many thanks, Shelley

I had the same problem and after trying every damn solution I found I just installed
another web browser (I already had opera).
One day I had another problem when installing some software "Incompatible Version
of the RPC Stub".
I fixed that up, and the explorer causing invalid page fault never appeared.
So go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321915 and download
mcrepair.exe overwrite existing files if asked, restart and that's it.

My problem was that each time I tried to access a driectory or file which I had expanded
in Explorer, the error message would appear and the only chioces I had were Close
or Details.
I applied Caroline's suggestion and it worked like a charm on a Celeron 400 running
98SE.
Problem gone :)

I'm glad I found this forum. My problem is totally crazy. I get the "Explorer has
caused...kernel32.dll" whenever I try to use any shortcut to open a folder (either
on the desktop or MS office shortcut bar), whether I'm online or not. It pops up
twice and after I click 'close' on the second one, the folder usually opens normally,
except for My Computer and Recycle Bin, which will not open at all. I can still go
online and download stuff with no problem. It doesn't happen when I open individual
files with shortcuts, only folders. The plan is to put up with this till I get a
burner, then back everything up and re-install 98SE and Office 2000, unless someone
on here has an idea. Maybe it's just haunted.

I have a similar problem - clicking on File in Internet Explorer and moving the cursor
to the New option brings up the error message "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault
in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff7b9f5."
I've tried the solution suggested by Caroline in this thread of renaming OFFLOG,
but this doesn't solve the problem. Any ideas out there? It's only started happening
recently, and been fine for a long time up until then
Thanks
Martin

Zach...was it a typo that you renamed it applog? The instruction says to rename it
...applog2 and reboot which will recreate the original file. Also what IE version
do you have? Maybe download IE6 if your not using this version?

You have to pay for this right? I mean, it scans it for free but then to actually
FIX the errors it wants you to pay.

I tried all the suggestions provided here (to rename the Applog folder, to turn the
graphic performance down to 0%, to uninstall and reinstall IE6, to run the "mcrepair.exe"
program) but nothing happened.
My browser (IE6 on Win 98 SE) gives me two errors when I try to load some web pages:
"Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module MSDXM.OCX in 0187:64b6152c" "Explorer
caused an invalid page fault in module DIMM.DLL in 0187:642039de"
I started to get this error after I installed some Windows Updates; I was able to
remove almost all of them (some language packs for asian languages, an update for
Microsoft Office 2000) but I cannot switch back from DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime.
Is there someone who had this same problem and was able to get rid of it? Thankyou!

I realize it has been almost 3 years since your post, but let me tell you this! It
works, and it works on ME to boot! I have been searching for this fix, searched
almost everywhere I could think of, was getting ready to do a fresh install, and
I tried one last time.
AMAZING, and thanks a million!

In Windows ME, I was receiving a kernel32.dll error when right clicking on the desktop.
I tried many things suggested in this post but this finally fixed the problem.
1. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to edit the System.ini file.
2. Add the following line to the [boot] section of the file: drivers=mmsystem.dll
3. Save and then close the System.ini file.
4. Restart your computer.
This also brought back the volume icon in the task bar.
I hope this helps.
