Frankly, I don't think you're doing -anything- wrong; I think it's a hardware limitation.
On my Sony VAIO, I've noticed that to use the external monitor I need to reduce color
depth to 16 bits. My -->GUESS<-- is that the video memory is inadequate to handle
2 monitors at 32-bit color.
It's a legitimate annoyance, but for me it's livable.

I have a similar problem on a '99 Hitachi. I just went from 2000 to 98 yesterday,
and now I only have two color options: BnW and 16 colors (not 16-bit). What do I
do?

If it previously went above 16 then your graphics adapter is probably set up wrong.
Try re-installing it.

I have the same problem, but what if you have uninstalled and reinstalled windows
three times to fix it but it still only gives the options of 2-bit and 16-bit?

That's like amputating your arm because you got a scratch on your finger.
BAD SOLUTION.
Using it shows you need to learn how to use a search engine properly.

It's amazing that of the >15,000 posts on this forum
you couldn't find a thread with smarter people posting to it.
Of course, it's apparent that YOU aren't very smart yourself
--not bothering to read what's in THE
BIG RED BOX.
As this is 1 of the 2 most-asked questions here,
it should be duck soup to find the answer many times over:
http://www.google.com/search?q=site:annoyances.org+forum-win98+colors+driver
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=site:annoyances.org+"+forum+win98"+colors+driver
If something KEEPS getting borked, it's because YOU keep getting it infected
or your hard disk media is old and defective.
