Solution to 'What do I do with ''unknown'' devices in Device Manager?'

Here is a solution to What
do I do with "unknown" devices in Device Manager?:
Quite often, Windows (95, 98, others?) fails to determine what devices are the first
time around, but can later succeed. To make Windows try again, "delete" all
of the unknown devices from your system, and reboot.
This is necessary because Windows will not try to identify a device that is already
flagged as "unknown". Windows fails to detect some devices upon initial installation
of the OS, possibly because the support files for the device aren't loaded yet. Also,
devices such as sound card sub-devices or USB devices may not be properly identified
if the devices which they depend on (such as the base sound card drvier or the USB
root hub) are not yet installed. So always try deleting the devices and rebooting;
sooner or later you will get all of the device drivers installed in the right order.

if that doesn't work in that case what u could do is that remove the device and install
the drivers if u have cd for that without restarting the computer but make sure u
have the cd or the drivers with you.

I had the same problem with a mystery PCI device after building my new computer around
an FCI AZ11E motherboard and loading Win98SE as the op system.
I surmise that it is an on-board RS232 "modem" that is not fully hardware implemented
on the board and never will be (a "feature", as it were, of this motherboard). The
hint is that it is an "unknown PCI communications device" and there are NO drivers
that I know of available for it. Deleting it via Device Manager just causes a re-install
on next boot-up. It doesn't seem to cause any problems, so I just ignore it.
"If it aint broke, don't fix it...."
