'How to stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

START-PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-SYSTEM TOOLS-SYSTEM INFORMATION. Now comes the fun part
:) Click on "TOOLS". Drop down to "SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY" and click on it.
Go over to the 6th tab (STARTUP) and click on it. You should now be looking at the
entire list of programs that are capable of starting when Windows starts. Every computer
is different, so as an example, here's what I left checked; ScanRegistry, SystemTray,
LoadPowerProfile, and AtiKeyCwd32. That's it. When my computer starts, I have 95%
of system resources available. Not bad for a dinosaur (300mhz Celeron w/256Megs of
RAM). One last thing; when you're done checking and unchecking the boxes, your computer
will want to restart. Let it.

That's great, but why spend half an hour navigating the start-menu, when you can
just go Start ---> Run ---> and type in "msconfig".

No, not bad at all, except I'd probably wonder about the absence of antivirus software.
The 'ATI' program you mention might not be necessary on startup.

I am replying to your thread because I was having trouble defragging and checking
for errors on my computer. An error message would come up saying that something was
“running in the background”. I did the three finger “Boogie” cont., Alt., Delete
and removed everything except systray and explorer, but there was still something
running.
After reading your advice, I followed your instructions and “Bingo” Defrag and error
check worked fine.
A BIG THANK YOU! I have been trying to resolve this problem for weeks..
