This is a Hardware problem. This can Ussaually be fixed by checking your drivers in the control pannel under "System Devices" If a device is not working it will have a yellow Exclamation mark. Delete the device and go to driver info and reinstall the driver. If that does'nt work. Turn off your computer, Unplug it, open the case and remove your cards and put them in another socket. As long as they fit, they will work in whatever socket you choose but don't force or damage them. Then restart your computer with your Windows 98 disk in the CD rom. Windows will automatically detect these devices and reinstall them for you!

Not necessarily true...

These errors aren't alway hardware errors, and it could lead to a lot of work for 
nothing if he takes the PC apart to do this.

It's best to post the exact error before doing anything.
