Yes, Norton Utilities "Disc Doctor" will fit it in about 15 Seconds.

True, but even in Auto-Fix mode, Norton Disk Doctor (NDD.EXE) then thinks that a
"major catastrophe" has befallen one's FAT32 disk (when it's merely the incorrect
"Free Cluster Count"), and insists that you "Generate a Report" before it will continue
with the next drive. And even if you choose to skip the report, IT STILL REQUIRES
MANUAL INTERVENTION FROM THE USER!
(BTW, it is *MUCH* faster to run NDD at boot-up in DOS mode on ALL of one's disks,
before Windows starts; and it's nearly impossible to run NDD on C: after Windows
starts, because Windows is then constantly accessing the C: drive, which interrupts
NDD and causes NDD to restart endlessly.)
Generally, the ONLY thing that's wrong with my disks after (frequent) crashes is
the incorrect "Free Cluster Count", but NDD's *HALTING* and WAITING for the User
to "Generate [or skip] a Report" on *every* such trivial "error", turns an "automatic/auto-fix"
rebooting (when I could/should be doing something constructive during each of these
VERY long Windows reboots) into an EXASPERATING reboot, requiring incessant, distracting
-- and completely unnecessary -- MANUAL INTERVENTION!
Hence, the need for a straight-forward, SINGLE-purpose DOS utility program that will
run on FAT32 disks/partitions, and will simply and QUICKLY fix/correct *JUST* the
erroneous "Free Cluster Count", without doing ANY other disk checking or repairs.
Except when there are REAL disk errors -- which NDD *should* and *does* stop for
-- such a wonderful little program would enable fast, UNattended, automatic reboots
(*) withOUT causing NDD to halt on every trivial "Free Cluster Count" error, and
(*) withOUT causing McAfee's DiskMinder program to similarly HALT on every "Free
Cluster Count" error, and
(*) withOUT having to resort to ScanDisk (!horrors!), which, although it DOES fix
THAT error silently, it then takes for*EVER* to run it on 20+ large disks/ partitions!
:P
Does anyone know where we might find such a WONDERFUL little utility? This problem
has obviously gotten to be MUCH more than just an "annoyance" for me. So I apologize
for the occasional "SHOUTING", but *I* *AM* *NOW* *DESPERATE*! ;-)

We ALL must report this Bug to Microsoft. They should be responsible about software
that they made.
I've checked the Microsoft site, they doesn't have any articles that discuss this
matter. It seems that they didn't care about this annoyance.

Thanks for your answers.
I will give this "Disk Doctor" a try and also try to tell NDD that there was no major
catastrophe on my disks.
Otherwise, my Windows 98 has gone and is now replaced by XP, which is much more stable
(uptime of weeks are now possible), so the problem has mostly solved itself. But
for my temporary data disk, is use still the FAT32 file system. In fact, I have gone
also one step back and use now FAT16 for the boot drive. I also upgraded to a RAID1
system (for system, programs and important data), to reach more protection against
hardware failures.
btw. The name "Disc" is used for optical medias and "Disk" for magnetical medias.
So have a nice time and a running computer.

Thanks for your answer.
When i note this problem to Microsoft, i cant expect an answer.
When i post my problem here, the chances for a solution are even higher, as seen.
The only praticable thing to do, is to post microsoft a link to this thread.
In my opinion, microsoft should read all threads of annoyances.org and fix all these
problems.

re: FAT32 Free Space Bug - PATCHED SCANDISK here!

I'd looked for a "QuickFix" util for this "bug" for a few nights and had no luck,
so finally...
I've fixed SCANDISK.EXE from Win98SE (DOS part) so the check/fix is now taking just
a few seconds for a big 40Gb partition!
To get more info and download patched EXE go to:
http://scandisk.nm.ru (in English)
