Question about 'Change a file association on the fly'

I have a question about Change a file association on the fly:

I have two questions. First I go to open a file and I get the open with box and I have no idea what the answer is. How do you know what program to tell the computer to open the file with. Second I go to open a file and it tells me program can not be found. For example Ameirca:exe. Is this something that should be on my computer and I just cannot find it. Thanks.

Check out this
link to see what type of program opens a particular type of file.

Ameirca:exe looks like a program file, but if you look carefully, it has a colon
in between the filename and the extension, so it is likely that an error has been
made when associating a file. The only valid punctuation mark between a filename
and the extension is a full-stop (period).
