There's another reason Windows Update might not work.  If you have the following 
key in the registry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoWindowsUpdate 
= 1 then you get the Thank you for your interest page.

Setting the key back to 0 enables WindowsUpdate again.  This key gets set if you 
run a custom IE install which disables WindowsUpdate, or if a network policy file 
has the option to disable WinUp set.

Thanks Mr E My Windows 98 first edition, doean't have the exact registry line you indicated ,after policies it has network,ratings,, its getting deeper!

In the policies folder i only have two more folders: Network and Ratings - both set at default - any other suggestions
