I have a question about I used Tweak UI to get rid of the little arrows on my icons, now they are back and Tweak UI won't do anything to get rid of them again, what do I do?:

Guess I would first try using the 'rebuild icons' in Tweak's repair tab.

If no go, I believe setting an icon size of 30 or less eliminates these
(under 'appearance' tab, in 'display' properties).

Another possibility: check a couple registry locations.

However, you before make any changes, BACKUP your registry first!

Start>Run and type REGEDIT and press enter.

Navigate down to the following keys and see if any
values are stored in 'IsShortcut'. If they have values,
delete the values.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile

Close REGEDIT; you may need to restart.

Mine are also back, even with Tweak telling the computer to eliminate them. Just happened today when I downloaded a new critical update from MS for Win 98. Haven't edited the registry yet, but am going to try on Monday and do the recommended fixes to get rid of the shortcut arrow.

These were just some ideas to consider; just remember to always backup your registry before making any changes to it.

The registry edit that Larry proposed is my favorite
Windows tweak.
It works very well ,but I would recommend that instead
of deleting the key ,just right click on it and rename
it to IsShortcutOld......
Do this in both instances (.lnkfile and .pifile) and then
close regedit and reboot.
The arrows will be gone !

Good Luck

I had the same side effects after d\l that update. Thanks Larry for the remedy! Although the icons were the obvious, it sometimes makes you wonder what else M$ slips by!

Did it the way GalaxyMaster recommended and renamed the 2 shortcut references with OLD at the end and rebooted. The arrows are gone. Thomas

Now that you mention it, I installed a critical update the day I noticed the arrows. I tried rebuild icons, no luck there, I looked up those keys in the registry and there was no inkfile at all. I think this may be the problem. I found the piffile key and there were no entries under the IsShortcut key. Just "". So, what now? Thanks in advance!!!

Microsoft destroyed the best feature of TweakUI on March 7, 2002. TweakUI>Explorer>Shortcut (Arrow) Overlay choices were rendered useless. This problem is caused by the installation of "Windows 98 Q313829 Update" covered in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-014, both available at the Microsoft Update website. This update covers a problem of low risk for most home users, and I would recommend NOT installing it, unless you don't care about icon shortcut arrows. If you already have: The only fix that worked for me (and I tried them all) was Galaxy Master's, since there were no values in my registry under "IsShortcut" in Larry's fix. I have notified Microsoft Support, so they may be able to correct and reissue this update in the future. One can only hope. I am surprised that Microsoft hackers didn't catch this. Maybe that is why stocks rise and FALL! There are now millions of ticked-off icon-shortcut-arrow-haters out there, so whoever signs-off Microsoft security updates in the future should be thinking if they wish to remain employed.

Caution: Do not attempt this fix if you are not comfortable with editing the Registry. You should backup or have recently backed up your Registry so you can restore it in case you delete something important by accident. Okay... Open Regedit, (Run, type regedit, ok). Click on Edit, click on Find and type IsShortcut and delete. Go back to Edit, Find again and continue deleting all instances of it until you've finished searching the registry. Go back to your desktop, press F5 and Restart your PC. Presto, No more little white shortcut arrows.

The Final Fix. Like many of you, I am always annoyed by the shortcut arrows, and for whatever reasons, the abovementioned fixes do not work for everyone. I made some registry edits and got rid of the arrows only to find that any NEW shortcuts had the arrows again! IsShortcut is null, likewise .lnkfile and .piffile fixes are already in place. The nasty arrows are back on three new shortcuts I've made. This fix requires the use of an Icon editor like Axicons, Microangelo, etc... any editor that will allow you to view and edit .dll files. Jump out to a MSDOS window and copy shell32.dll to shell3X.dll or some name you will remember with a .dll extension (you can't rename it because windows constantly uses this file.) Open your icon editor and load shell3X.dll. The icon overlays are in position 30, both formats, the little arrow and big one. Set your brush or paint bucket to your transparent color and obliterate the arrows in both formats. (make sure to get all the white) What you are doing is making a blank, transparent overlay that the system will use for shortcuts. Save your work and exit the program. You can't edit the original shell32.dll because, as before, windows is using it constantly. Now you need to get rid of windows. Boot to MSDOS mode. (START, SHUTDOWN, RESTART IN MSDOS MODE). When the system comes up, you should be in C:\WINDOWS. Change dir to system, (CD SYSTEM) and type REN SHELL32.DLL SHELL32.OLD [enter] REN SHELL3X.DLL SHELL32.DLL [enter] CD ..[enter] win [enter] ------------------------ The little arrows are gone! You may also just power off from MSDOS mode and then restart-- or as soon as windows does come up, do another restart as the win command may not load all of your normal drivers. Hope this helps. I know it was driving me crazy! One other small change I made that I'm not sure is necessary is to change the file date and time on shell3X.dll to the same as your shell32.dll. Any decent file manager can usually make this "touch".

Found this solution on the web: In your case, what's likely to have happened is that the March 7th Critical Update damaged a file called shell32.dll. You can restore the file from your Windows 98 CD using the System File Checker utility. To do so, type SFC in the Windows Find menu, and select "Extract one file from installation disk." Enter the file name. Then press start, and browse to the CD-ROM drive in the "restore from" box. Once the file has been restored, you'll need to reboot. Good luck.

This thread was a godsend to me, a year later. I finally got Windows Update to work again a few weeks ago, after an install of IE 6.0 2 years ago broke it, and then, what happens but the horrid arrows on all my icons. So I followed the brilliant Registry fix here and was thrilled at the visual results. However, I've found that the few Desktop keyboard shortcuts I had, e.g. for Eudora, NetTerm, my DOS calc.exe program, no longer work. Is there a way to fix this? How can I make new keyboard shortcuts for these programs and not see horrible little arrows? Or must I resign myself.

The problem with deleting the IsShortCut key is that the operating system uses this to track links. 1 This tracking will not work properly anymore. 2 Any shortcut keys in a pif/lnk in your start menu don't work anymore 3 IE thinks it is not the default browser anymore The fix with changing the iconsize in the display properties didn't do anything on my system, except make the icons out of focus. I think the only real solution here is to hack/edit the arrow icon overlay in shell32.dll.

I use Windows 98 Second Edition (Win 98SE). First of all I recommend you let those "IsShortcut" values alone. Doing anything with those values can only cause you frustration and a number of headaches. This is not a guess or assumption: When a recent update is applyed (March 2003, I've read), an icon corruption in shell32.dll results. To restore shell32, from the Run dialog, type sfc (for "System File Checker"). From there follow the instructions to restore the original copy of shell32.dll from your Windows CD-ROM (or Windows installation folder to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. After that, restart the system. Your arrows should be gone. If you have any build of Windows 95, you can restore the file from within DOS mode. Hopefully you've resolved the issue by now, but good luck.

I did this to kill the little arrows and now they are dead again.. THANKS!! Guess Microsoft SCREWED UP AGAIN.. But what else is new!! Buncha high paid screw ups if you ask me.. Thanks dude.. Try this people.. It works and easy to do rather then edit the registry where you could really screw up. This is fail safe. Besides you get rid of the real problem.. You also get prompted to back up the file you are about to replace but no real need too. The file inquestion is in your Windows system folder. AWESOME HELP!! Aka Warrior!!
