Help w/ network problems please

Hi, I'm having trouble with a computer on my new home network(1 PC running Win98, the other running Win2k Pro., the problem is with the Win98 Machine so I posted in this forum). I've tried removing and reinstalling TCP/IP in network properties, but nothing seems to help. I am using a D-link network switch and a Linksys Cable/DSL router to share my cable connection with my network. All connections are correct, and I've switched cables to be sure it isn't just a bad patch cable, and tried switching ports on the hub/switch and still had no luck. The link lights on the network switch and NIC for the computer in question(Win98) are intermittent, while the ones for the other computer(Win2k Pro)and the router are both constantly on or blinking in unison with network activity. The Win98 machine can intermittently see the Win2k machine in network neigborhood, and vice-versa, but the Win98 box can't find the router, while the other comp. can, and the same holds true with internet access(I'm typing this message from the Win2k machine because the Win98 one won't connect) I've had a problem similar to this before I had the network, and I ended up reinstalling the networking components for Win98 from the install CD, problem is that I can't remember which CAB files contain them. Does anyone here have any ideas? I was previously considering upgrading to WinXP on my Win98 machine, does anyone think this would help/solve the problem (I'm sure WinXP probably has new networking components that would install over the Win98 ones) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Don

I think you may have an "overly hardwared" problem. Your LinkSys Cable/DSL Router will eliminate the need for another hub or switch unless you are networking more than four computers. Connect the output of your cable modem to the input of the router and the computers to any of the output ports of the router. Be sure to power everything down before changing the connections. Follow the instructions that came with your router to power up and reset your router and network. If you are worried about missing network files, simply remove all installed networking components and restart your computer. Then reinstall them. If necessary direct to C:/Windows/Options/Cabs or your Windows 98 disk. As far as XP is concerned, it has a "Network Setup Wizard" which I have found to work very well. However,I don't think you need to spend the $100 to solve your problem. Follow the instructions packaged with your LinkSys Router and be sure to take advantage of its DHCP sever capabilities. Good Luck!

Ok, first things first. You said you had an "intermittent" blinking link lights. If you have two LED's then one is the link light and the other is an activity indicator (most likely). If the link light is blinking then I would remove all of the networking components including the driver for the NIC in question (You have your Win2K box to find the driver. Hopefully it will fit on a single floppy unless you have a burner and a CDROM drive in the Win98 box. If you don't have a burner then download a file splitter and break the file up over floppy’s). You need a solid link light before you try any other troubleshooting steps (If you had only one LED then it is probably supposed to blink intermittently).

Thanks for the response. I bought the single port version of the Linksys router because I already had the hub (given to me by a friend who upgraded to a router/hub combo) The router's manual says to connect the WAN port to the cable modem, and the LAN port to the uplink port on the hub, which makes sense to me. Here's a little more info that I forgot to include yesterday: The hub has only one light for each port, as does the NIC in my Win98 machine. Also, when I unplug the Win98 computer and hook it directly to the cable modem, it works, so I could easily download the latest drivers for the NIC, although if that works the NIC must be working somehow?!? I'm thinking now about buying a $20 NIC to see if mine is somehow defective (I need a NIC for another computer I plan on connecting to the hub once I get all this sorted out, so it wouldn't be a waste of money if mine still works) Also, my Win2K machine connects to the router just fine from any port in the hub, which sorta rules out a bad hub. I'll try buying a second NIC (and uninstalling the old one of course) and see if that helps. Thanks again for the help, Don

I got it working. All it took was a $9.95 D-Link network card (on sale @ BestBuy) and the thing was working flawlessly. Thanks for all the help guys. Don
