Has anyone ever tried to get the logon screen back by reversing this process? Did it work ok for you?

I'm having the same problem and haven't made progress solving it; I too have to log off after startup (only on one of my two networked computers), then log back on before I can see any computers in my network neighborhood - including the one I'm working from. (Windows 98 SE w/ ethernet 10/100 cards & hub linking two computers). Everything was fine when I first set up the network, then I had to re-install everything on the one I'm having this problem with (a friend using my computer to download Napster-type mp3's & mpg clips "ignored" my McAfee "this is a virus" warning, a symbol of a hand holding a huge wiggling bug---sheesh!! and he tried to play a girlie clip(?) anyhow!!) So, every since I reformatted & reinstalled everything, I've had to log off, then log on again to get the network fully functional. I hope someone out there knows how to help us!!

I pulled this from... http://www.itso.iu.edu/howto/win-security/steps/#passwords Restricting Logon Access Within Windows 98, you can modify the registry to disable the AutoAdminLogon in Winlogon so that Windows 98 will not automatically log the user onto the workstation without any credentials. To start regedit, go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\AutoAdminLogon. Set the string value entry to 0 to disable automatic logon.

Tried your suggestion and changed AutoAdminLogon to 0 ;but to no avail; I still have to log off, then back on to see the Network. Incidently, during boot-up I don't get an initial Logon screen; so actually I have to log off before I ever log on!

I've tried all that is recommended on this forum but to no avail. The windows logon box just keeps coming back & the mentioned registry keys are not in the registry. Any other suggestions?

Reinstall Windows. I am a computer expert, and know EXACTLY what I you are talking about. Autologon registry and reinstalling Client for Microsoft Networks won't fix the problem. You have to reinstall your operating system. I have seen this issue multiple times, and there is no fix for it besides a reinstall. Yes, I agree that it is stupid, and that we shouldn't have to be performing these steps, but that's what happens when you purchase a Microsoft product. Get used to it, that is all.

Check your Win98 installation CD for a file named AUTOLOG.INF, look under Tools\Mtsutil\. Right click on it and select install. Done! The best way to avoid this is to always enter a password for the default user when installing Win9x.
