You can easily do better than this tip. Try the following:

C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /e,/root,YOUR-DIR

where YOUR-DIR is the subdirectory you want to be at the top of
the tree displayed by explorer. This way, if you want to start some
place deep in the subdirectory tree on your disk without all the
garbage showing above it,you see a neat display.

Example: c:\windows\explorer.exe /e,/root,c:\my documents

Tim, I'm running windows 2000 5.00.2195 service pack 2 (hopes this means something to you -- I just know it is my version of windows!) I tried your solution below in an attempt to get windows explorer to start in my directory of choice. Here is what I typed into the target line: C:\WINNT\explorer.exe /e,//root,c:\school I want the bugger to open up to c:\school but this does not seem to work. Can you help a brother out? Thanks, Michael

Well, Bro, the only problem I can see is the double slash in front of "root". It's supposed to be just a single slash in front of each option. If that's just a typo in your message, then I can't see the problem. I tried typing your command into the "run" dialog and it worked fine for me (without the double slash, that is). The only thing I can think of is that explorer on Win2K works differently from the one on Win ME. I kind of doubt it though. Messing around in the run dialog (in the start menu) is definitely a good way to experiment. If you don't have a run option showing in your start menu, open a command line window and do it from there. It's a lot faster and easier than repeatedly modifying the command line in a shortcut properties dialog. Good luck!

I appreciate it

Tim, I appreciate both your humor and the help! I mean that. I tried the run thing and it worked great too. Go figure. I wonder if it is because, in my ignorant haste, I changed the typing in the "start in" box. I'll go find out what it used to say and try it again. I sure appreciate that tip about using "run" as I was going crazy doing it the other way! You computer angels are wonderful, truly wonderful. With sincere gratitude and a bizzillion karma points, Michael

Your praise is very much appreciated. I hasten to point out, though, that if I might be regarded as some kind of angel, there are archangels out there who don't just sort of help when it's easy, but make the world turn as it should. As an example, I'm working on publishing large documents using a markup language called DOCBOOK, analogous to HTML, but for creating printed and electronic publications instead of just static web pages. I'm reading a 90-page manual by a guy named Markus Hoenicka describing exactly how to do it in windows. It's an incredible piece of work, it's free for the downloading and, as far as I know, he was never paid a cent for it. Consider contributors on the scale of Donald Knuth, Linus Torvalds, Larry Wall, Tim O'Reilly - these people make Gates look like the devil incarnate. Although your praise for my helpful little suggestions makes me blush a little, it's appreciation that encourages me to come back to help again. Kudos to you for responding.

Guys, by the way, this will work even better (your opening dir WON'T be the "root" dir): %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,,[Your_Dir_Here] See the two commas (,,)? No need to put "/root" there if you don't need to. Also, I don't know if "%SystemRoot%" will work under Win 9x, but it works under XP. Otherwise, just put "C:\Windows" or "C:\WinNT" instead (sans quotes). Hope this helps!

Need Help with Start/Run missing

Help Michael! You gave someone a tip back when about how to do start/run from a command line when the run option isn't in the start menu. I didn't understand - is that from a dos prompt? Do you have any idea how I lost it? What kind of actions might do that? This the first time I've seen this site - it's great!

Debbie, Unfortunately I am of no help. I was the one being helped. Perhaps try replying to one of my computer angels listed here.

Just came across this thread.. I'm running XP Professional-(just learning it). I want my explorer to show in the left pane like it did on my old Win98 system. Had "C" listed at the top of pane when opened. I now have "my documents", then "my computer" and have to expand this to get to "C" drive. How/where do I go to change left pane to open with "C" drive on top, or even "A", then "C"? thanks PAUL

Truly awesome tip; it works great! Any possibility of "customizing" the shortcut to Explorer from: Start -> Explore, to open to a desired directory this way? Best Regards ~ Jacob

Run command is missing from the Start menu. + Right-click the Taskbar and select Properties. + Select Start Menu. + Click on Customize. + Click on Advanced. + Look for a check box for Run command in the option window. Check the box.
