Question about 'Troubleshooting Driver Problems'

My Add New Hardware Wizard doesn't seem to work. It won't recognize any device drivers
on my cd rom drive or floppy drive. I'm trying to install a Webstar cable modem,
and I'm not getting anywhere.

John: perhaps an interim step is missing? The link below (after your text) shows
a more involved process than the purchase ads indicate (surprise), with cable splitters,
Ethernet cable, lights that need to turn green, etc. At least they offer a choice
on the pc hookup between Ethernet card and a USB port. If the Add New Hardware wizard
refuses to show, an alternative method is to go into control panel and work directly
from the device's icon.

Terry or anyone that can help! Please list in detail how you were able to install
this webstar modem driver. I am having the same problem as john, it says no driver
was detected. I have the cd rom that didn't work , I tried to download from webstar
site but i can't get the software to work no matter what i do. I'm about to take
this "easy self-install kit" back to comcast. I called comcast to get help with this
and and they had no idea how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too am having this problem. Windows 98 add hardware wizard won't recognize either
the Webstar USB driver or SMC ethernet adapter driver disk on CD Rom or if copied
to a floppy disk. My next try will be to reload Win 98. Any help from you who have
been working this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I have been having the same exact problem and actually spent $89 on a new Windows
98 CD thinking that was the problem. I spoke with someone at Charter and they told
me to go to www.scientificatlanta.com and download the drivers to a floppy. He also
recommended going to a computer store and buying a NIC for my computer to connect
through the ethernet, instead of USB. He said it would be about $20 for the NIC
card.

dear friends
to let you know of the problem here is it
1) read carefully -- you must be having a NDIS of a lower version than expected by
the web star
( so dont just rely on the webstar and older windows version )
2) there is DLL and run set up problem as the new webstar is 32 bit based and all
the system.exe are of the older operating system.
hope this helps
remedy is to get off the old window 98 and install new OS fresh
Regards
abhishek

This thread is very old but this fix may still be of use to someone.
I was facing this same problem: running win98se, trying to install a Webstar DPC2100
cable modem, connecting via USB (version 1.1).
I tried over and over, downloaded new and old drivers, etc. No matter what I did,
the install new hardware wizard would not "see" the drivers on the CD (or anywhere
else) even though they were there and were written for win98. I even called webstar,
they had no solution.
After trial and error, I figured it out:
[1] I disconnected the the modem from the pc, then uninstalled all USB devices.
I did this by:
[a] Running the uninstall programs on the install cd (Undpx2A.exe and Undpx2K.exe).
[b] Then I went into control panel -> system ->device manager, and removed all my
USB devices (but not the USB Root Hubs or PCI to USB Universal Host Controllers).
[2] Then I shut down, plugged in the usb from the cable modem again and rebooted.
[3] This time, when the "installing new hardware" wizard started, it recognized the
drivers on the CD. Go figure. One of my other drivers must have "blocked" the wizard
from seeing the correct file.
The modem works like a charm now. Problem solved. No need to install a new OS. Hope
this helps someone...
