Question about 'Windows says it's ''Dangerously Low on System Resources'''

I have a question about Windows
says it's "Dangerously Low on System Resources":
I am having a problem with resources. I keep getting the error message system dagerously
low on resources. I have checked to see what else is running and it's not much. It
happens when I get online mostly, sometimes just checking my mail triggers it. I
have reconfigured my start up using msconfig without results. When I turn my comp
on resources are between 60 and 80%. By the time I get online I'm under 60%. Any
ideas... I'm out of them. I have 10 gbytes with over 6 free, and 182 ram. I use msn
internet service with msn explorer.

Tech tip. Download and install Ad-Aware 5.7 from www.lavasoft.de (made in USA) it
is a free program which removes web-bugs and deep scans your registry for unauthorised
changes made by third party programs coming on to your computer via the web. If you
have already done your, clean, defrag, scan maintenance in safe mode, I think you might
get a pleasant surprise. Ad-Aware took 282 pieces of net-junk off three computers
locally and ALL are working much better. One with ME and two with 98se. Three of
a brand new XP !!! You can also try defrag.exe from ME which is three times faster!

Hello Jennifer, Well the real answer from an engineers point of view is, especially
if your computer is like my friend's 98se, with insufficient RAM, and that is because
of the content of html web-pages and file sizes these days, so the more RAM ... AND
video memory, (16 or 32Mb) you have the better really, but there is another way,
and that is to use the Opera 6.01 browser which does use less system resources, as
it appears to handle it in a different way and which is easy to empty of temporary
files, cookies ... (which take up RAM) (Desktop icons also take up RAM, (I have three,
the rest are now on the start bar, something which is really easy to do ) .........
and history and come straight back on-line, which is what I do, as I find that IE
freezes after just a short time on-line depending on the web-page content. Good surfing
and have a nice one. I am still running fine at 43% sys.res. (i.e. 43% of 256Mb
= 110.08Mb : 60% 182Mb = 109.2Mb so you are just about at a standstill. If yu can
set your browser to open in only ONE window as keeping the data for rapid changes
from one window to another by keeping several windows open at the same time just
drains resources for no particular purpose. Or it could be something else as well,
such as spyware, according to MCA, which has cause my IE to crash several times.

Your whole reply is built around the premise that resources
and RAM are the same thing. This is just not true.Resources are a fixed
area of memory, and the total size of that area remains the same regardless of how
much RAM you have installed. Desktop icons use resources, but no more so than having
them on the taskbar - it's still part of the GUI, which is what resources are largely
for. Windows 98 should run OK with 192mb of RAM (182 is an impossible number -
RAM comes in multiples of 8) Here are a couple of Knowledge Base articles about
resources:- Free
System Resources Do Not Return to Previous Value (Q146418)
System
Resources Decrease After Starting and Quitting a Program (Q185832)

Thanks Paul! Certainly ME is a pain to maintain. Better now though with LOTS of RAM,
a registry modification to unload dlls not in use, and RAMpage 1.6. All current
freezes (NO crashes) have been due to the recycle bin.

I have a similar problem with word. When I try to access a word document I get the
same response. Some of the respondants seem to chatter on on how good or how bad
the OS is but they do not seem to have an an answer on how to solve the problem!!!
Did you find a rsolution to your problem?

I have the same problem. I have run Spybot SD, Ad-ware, Panda virus scan, I have
read all the threads in this form and check each type of fix and I still get the
the message and the machine locks up. I am running Win98 SE SR1 with all the patches
applied, IE 6 with all the patches applied. It seems that if I disconnect from my
DSL I don't get the message but every 15-20 seconds a message that says IE trying
to connect to the web do I want to work offline. I click yes and it reappears in
15-20 seconds. I have turned off all the programs in msconfig so nothing is running
that I can see. So when I reconnect to the DSL, no popup comes up but after 5-10
minets, just leaving the machine idle, I try to open any program and I get "Dangerously
Low On Resources". I am at a loss as to what to do next. Anyone else have this
happen to them and how did you fix it.

Unfortunately, most of the solutions posted don't help at all. I have gotten my machine
to have 86% of resources free on boot. And this is a Pentium 200MMX with 256MB of
RAM (no, it's NOT my main machine). I run the resource monitor and do various tasks.
I also have Analog X's MAXMEM running, to clear out my ram, I can usually get 60%
free.
When I delete a lot of files, or empty the recycle bin, the resource monitor suddenly
goes down from 74% to 0% in the blink of an eye. Appears to be an explorer problem.
If I'm really patient and wait a while, my resources come back, by explorer is no
longer responding.
Has anyone got a solution to this yet?
I don't have this same problem on my newer machine (also running 98SE because I hate
XP). I think it may have to do with my harddrive on the older computer being forced
to run in MS-DOS compatibility mode.
