The advice given is certainly useful but no longer entirely accurate.
There are security holes in programs such as MS Outlook that allow
viruses to run even if the attachment is never opened. Thus here is the
list I would use:

1) Don't use Outlook...or at the very least, make sure to download and
   apply security patches immediately as they are released.
2) Don't open attachments--even attachments that come from friends
   unless you know the friend intended to send it to you. A good idea
   is to mail back and ask the friend about the attachment first.
3) Back up early, back up often.
4) Don't use the MS Address Book. Keep your addresses in another place,
   such as a plain text file. (This will prevent you from spreading most
   viruses even if you infect yourself.)
5) If you're really worried, keep an anti-virus program around. Just make
   sure to keep its virus definitions up to date or it's useless.
