I can't change my resolution (win98)

An elderly friend of mine just had windows 98 installed on his computer, and the
resolution is set at 600x480. I have tried to change it many times by going to display
under control panel. I make the changes and the computer restarts, and when it loads
back up, none of my changes have been made! Does anyone have any idea what would
be going on?? I would greatly appreciate any feedback i can get. Thanks

right-click on my computer, hit properties, then hit the device manager tab. remove
the display adapter and the monitor, then reboot and try applying the changes again.

Have the Video drivers been installed? It could be running on the basic windows drivers.
