Question about 'Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers'

Hi! I have connected my computer to another computer running Windows XP. I am currently running Windows 98 and I can't get the two to communicate. I have been able to access the XP computer before using Windows ME, but for some reason 98 has a hard time. I can't even get a login screen to come up for me. I know that the NICs are installed correctly and that I have all of the right protocols connected, but is there anything else that I need to do to get the computers to share files? Can anyone help? Thanx

Have you designated the files on either/or both computers as "shared"?

Have you tried to "ping" either computer to make sure that they are in fact connected?

Funny thing is this happens only on a very few Win98 machines. I found the following procedyre as a solution. Once the Win98 pc starts click on start & select logout. The machine will bring up login dialog box. Type in your name & password. For some reason, which I have not been able to figure out, after this procedure the network pcs show up in the network neighbouhood.
