Question about 'Do I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?'
Thursday, May 9, 2002 at 7:56 pm Posted by Dave Boehr
(3 messages posted)
When I boot up my computer I get a message saying
that I am missing:
C:\Progra~1\Symantec\symevnt.386. The computer works fine but this annoyance stops
my boot and I then I have to "Hit any key" to continue. I have checked my Registry
for any reference with no luck. I have tried to find my autoexec.bat file but it
refers me to autoexec.tsh but that file seems to be empty. There does not seem to
be any reference to this in my win.ini or system.ini files. Any suggestions would
be much appreciated. Thanks

This file refers to a Norton product -probably
Norton Antivirus....??
Have you recently deleted NAV from your system , or
uninstalled a trial version.....??

I think you should find this file in system.ini, so I'm surprised that you couldn't
find it there.

getting rid of symevnt.386 boot message
Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 1:09 am Posted by Mick
(3 messages posted)
To get rid of this error message (which usually occurs after uninstalling Norton
Antivirus - Crappy program, try AVG - 100% free and good at www.grisoft.com)
Click Start > Run > Regedit
Search for symevnt.386 in the registry and delete the key you find. Should be at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\current control set\services\vxd
Search for any other instances and delete those as well.
This should fix the problem...Visit www.microsoft.com for info on editing the registry
if you're nervous...

if you did uninstall Norton then click start--run--type regedit--ok. Then doubleclick
on each of these:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\current control set\services\vxd
After you doubleclick the VXD key you'll see a SYMEVNT key on the list underneath.
Delete the SYMEVNT key then close regedit. That should remove the error.

Registry error message
Friday, November 29, 2002 at 7:50 pm Posted by Ian

I get a message on startup saying "cannot find device file system.ini file refers
but device file no longer exists".
nwlink.vxd
Should I delete the nwlink.vxd file to end this annoyance? The system otherwise works
fine.

THANKS A BUNCH, MICK! (And to you, John, for bringing this up.)
I had exactly the same problem for over a year, only with Norton Antivirus 2001.
When I tried to uninstall it, it didn't work - and BTW, for some strange reason,
more than 100 MB of my disk space (DRVSPACE - I compressed my C disk) seem to have
vanished, even after I had uninstalled all the mian components of that Norton trash.
(Any ideas on how could I get my disk space back..?)
I've removed all the "hidden" files that remained in my PC after uninstalling NAV,
but this one kept bugging me.
Thanks again, Mick!
And what you say about Grisoft is also true. I've been using it for a few months
now, and couldn't be happier. I only wish I had installed it instead of falling for
Norton propaganda..!
Best wishes,
A.

What a nightmare!!! So glad all of you were successful in restoring your systems.
I, on the other hand, not so lucky. The computer completely froze and I had to pay
$150.00 to get it repaired.
It is really scary when a program has so much control over your computer that trying
to uninstall it causes major
problems..no thank you, Norton! I will keep AVG!
Thanks for having this web site so I can vent my feelings!!! HA
Thx all.

Having used Norton for 5+years, I have to say it has been a good product for me and
has not caused any shutdowns or disasters. Unfortunately software is not perfect,
nor are the operating systems. Different combinations of software packages, and
different users, can create nightmares for some and pleasant dreams for others.
It could be far better, but very few of us are prepared to pay the price that would
be demanded for perfect products.

Thank you!!!!!!!! That WAS annoying!
I'm slowly but surely ridding my machine of all the Symantec remnants left over from
uninstalling Systemworks 2001.
I'm still getting some browser (IE 6 SP1) corruption and having to run fixie daily,
but I'll find that little leftover piece of Norton crap yet!!

helpful suggestion plus 1 gripe
Thursday, March 20, 2003 at 7:17 am Posted by Detah

I would suggest that you get a program called McAfee Uninstaller. Run this program
before you install any new programs. This program will monitor the copy locations
of all installed files, including stuff that goes to C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM and into the
registry. Then whenever you want you can completely and irrevocably remove every
single file that was installed with that program. It will prompt you when it encounters
a shared file. You can then decide whether to delete it or keep it. The Remove feature
is completely configurable. You can set it to automatically delete or keep shared
files, without a prompt. This is the most efficient program remover I have ever seen.
I have never had a remnant problem since then.
I picked up my copy off the rack at KMart for $10. Its an older version perhaps 4
years old now, but it works like a charm.
I do have one hesitation about McAfee. Their support is ungodly unreliable. A few
months ago, I purchased McAfee Guarddog. I purchased it in December 2002 off the
shelf at Best Buy and installed it in December 2002. This program comes with a full
version of Virusscan (v4.0). Unfortunately, it was over 2 versions old. When I tried
to get the virus definition files from their website, it told me that that version
was no longer supported and the virus definition files for that version no longer
existed. So it directed me to purchase their new version of Virusscan (v6.0, I think),
which was only going to cost me $40. Isn't that nice of them. So I emailed them
explaining what happened. I even told them that I would gladly fax them my dated
sales receipt to prove that I just purchased it. I never heard from them. I emailed
them again. And I emailed them again. I never heard from them. By this time, 30
days had passed since my purchase. Now I can no longer return it to BestBuy. Thank
you so much McAfee. Now I own your program, which cannot be upgraded, has no support,
ancient virus definition files (what good is a firewall if it can't detect incoming
viruses????) and worst of all the Guarddog program is crap. So now Im back to my
old version of Norton. I agree, it is not the best anti-virus program, but at least
it's still supported.

Thank you for your suggestions, but I think I'm going to just stay as far away from
both Symantec and McAfee as I can. Neither offers any support worth spit, and uninstalling
Norton components is apparently a larger issue than I thought. You can call for support
for $30 a call and just get told that your version is no longer supported! I now
use ZoneAlarm free firewall and have more and better support than Norton ever offered.
And I just installed Trend-Micro's PC-cillin 2003 antivirus, and they've responded
almost scarily fast to each e-mail question I've sent!

Thanks anyways! if you need antivirus i recommend mcafee, better than norton and
any other one cause it easier to use and knows more viruses, etc.

I tried your fix for the symevnt.386 error and it remained. Instead of building a
catapult for my computer I tried going into msconfig.exe and unchecked the line for
norton in the file, that fixed the problem!!!

well i have been reading all the praise for avg on this page and i would just like
to add my own comment...KEEP THE HELL AWAY FROM AVG!!!!!i was sucked in by the hype
only to have it causing me so much grief i decided to removed it from my computer.however
the program disliked this idea excessively and i had to try for quite some time before
i suceeded.however avg had the last laugh...as it left it chewed a few nice holes
in my registry and network programing.when i visited my local computer shop they
had a good laugh and told me to avoid the program...it causes no end of trouble!but
if somepeople can get away with using it good luck to them...you will need it!!!

Hi searched the Web for software for old pcs and I found a company named Maniasoft.
They are working on Windes xFeel. An operating system similar to Windows XP but it's
supposed to work on 386... They say it's not ready to ship but I'll be one of the
first consumer of this OS... for my 2 386 in my little computer lab.

me nuts for a week and i just decided to do a search on "symevnt.386" and found your
post.....i just went to the store to get my money back on Nortons 2004 and they wont
refund me so i'm down $90 Aussie dollars...i might try some other suggestions on
here but i'm happy with AVG so really whats the point only to get my money's worth
from Nortons and then i might still have problems.THANK YOU again...you'd be a handy

Sorry no cigar. I deleted everything in the Registry I still get the boot error about
symevnt.386. I am sure there is a registered dll that is getting called on boot up
somewhere. I checked the software\microsoft\windows\ run, run- runonce searched the
registry and deleted everything with Norton and Symantec still get that message.
