Ok (print this off to refer to...)

Start
Run
type regedit
enter
(this opens the registry)

The first item is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
click on the + sign beside it to expand it

Scroll down......way down until you come across:

                    lnkfile

Click on that folder

In the right pane , you will see some entries.
One of the is named " IsShortcut"

Right click on that entry and select "Rename"
Rename it to "IsShortcutOld "

Continue scrolling down again (in the left pane)
until you find the entry named :

                  piffile

Do the same thing as above - rename the IsShortcut to
IsShortcutOld.....

Close the registry. (Registry / Exit )

Reboot the computer.

If you have followed the instructions to the letter , the arrows
will be gone...

Good Luck

Galaxy Master, Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just use tweakui?

Re Tweak UI

Hi Dick -

I don't think so , particularly.....

It might be a little easier of you have Tweak UI already installed
,but I can perform that regedit in under 30 seconds ,and ,
for me ,it has always been permanent...

By that ,I refer to the innumerable posts here that people have
had their TweakUI tweaks undone by this or that update...

But if you dont have Tweak UI ,then you have to get it , install it
run it , blah blah blah.........

Mine have never wavered - thru all the questionable updates...
This has to be my favourite windows tweak.....

But that's just me -whatever turns anyones crank ,they're more
than welcome to use....

No pressure here .......*LOL*

Take Care

GM

Thanks for the come back. I try to stay out of the registry. Afraid I will really
screw something up good. Getting older and dumber every day. Although I do have Bobstur's
Batchfile in case I do screw up.(phantom)

Dick, that particular TweakUI tweak has been overridden by a recent Windows Critical Update.

I tried the fix you posted. I also tried using Tweak UI. But when I select IE6 as my default browser, (the only browser I have), --some how it puts the arrow back. Any more suggestions? Bruce

Bruce, if you change the size of the icon from windows fefault of 32 to 30, your desktop will redraw and the arrows will be gone. This can be done from the appearance tab of the Display Properties screen.

Hi! Is there a way via the registry to change EACH individual .url file icon? I want to be able to change the icon for one particular .url file but I can't find a reference in the registry. -Matt

The arrows also disappear after the installation of IE6 SP1. TweakUI doesn't rename the keys as in the suggested solution. I have been using TweakUI for years, but it turns out that not everything keeps on working after installing newer releases of MS-software. One might expect that installing a browser wouldn't change your desktop, but well, I'm disappointed again. After the renaming-tip I learned from my own experience that renaming the keys works fine. Just check your registry again. I wouldn't be surprised that first remowving the keys and then running TweakUI will re-insert those keys. Btw, I am running W98. I tried to install the newer version of TweakUI (TweakUI XP), but that will not run on W98. Succes

Hi'a Galaxy Master. I too am wanting to remove the arrows from my desktop icons. I did try Tweak UI, and although loaded and installed successfully, it doesn't seem to be working. Me thinks there is at least one bug in that programme....lol. Saw your posting and went through the steps you recommended. However, in my registry (I'm running win98se) there is no Inkfile folder listed under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The closest I have is Xnkfile. When I click on that folder, the file IsShortcut is listed. Didn't touch it, cos I've never been in the registry before and, well, you know...don't want to stuff it up.....lol. What would you recommend? Ciao.....Me

-=Changeing win98se ShortcutArrows.=-

Lets start from square 1,
as the above instructions have gotten alittle confuseing,
due to the number of posts, reposts, failures, & sucesses.

What I would like to do is In win98se,
Change all the default "ShortcutArrow" icons across my system,
to a simmilar but -Green-ShortcutArrow Icon, or 32x32.bmp file,
wich I've created elsewhere on my pc.

I wish only, to do this with win98se's Regedit program.
(as TweakUI and simmilar programs cannot keep up with Microsoft updates and changes.)

can some one please walk me through this process carfully,
 and in detail?

for sake of argument, lets presume that the Green ShortcutArrow in question,
 is on hard-drive as
D:/alt/system/icons/Green_SC_Arrow.bmp (32x32 px.)

--NOTE---(& Please observe carefuly)-----------------

-I'm generously experianced with Regedit. but definatly no expert.

-I have Tweak UI and it fails to accomplish the abode task, due to:

  - my InternetExplorer Verson = 6

  - I have written a text file, that i renamed "WorkDarnYou!.reg"
and executed this file in the standard doubble left clicking fashon.
and contained in the text file, were these lines:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons]
"29"="D:\\alt\\system\\icons\\Green_SC_Arrow.bmp"

This sucessfully changed the regestry to read:
29	D:\alt\system\icons\Green_SC_Arrow.bmp

but it is not solving the delema.
the white and black default ShortCutArrow icon still remains.

--End NOTEs-----------------------------------

 Please Assist.

To completely remove the shortcut arrow, open Internet Options/Programs tab and uncheck "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" Then delete Isshortcut from the following three registry keys: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut Regedits alone will eliminate arrows on next boot, but if IE checks if it's default, it loads another Isshortcut in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut
