Question about 'Windows says it's ''Dangerously Low on System Resources'''

About a week ago I started having a similar problem with low resources. I have narrowed
the problem down to only happening when I use MS Word 2000. I can not open any Word
files, any size. Unistalled and reinstalled MS Office 2000 suite and no change.
Warm and cold boot doesn't help. Resource meter says System 72% free, User 72%
free, and GDI 88% free. I have 512MB RAM running on a Dell 700Mhz. System monitor
does not give me any indications of a problem either. Anyone know of a solution?

Here's a list to go by; it came from a Wiz on a forum :)
The things that make the computer slow are the many unecessary items that automatically
startup when Windows starts.
Right-click on the icons in the tray area, open each, go through the options to turn
off the "tray" or "run at startup" feature.
For the others, go to Start>Run, type msconfig. Leave systray, scan registry, Load
Power Profile, *StateMgr, your virus scanner and firewall if you have one.
Go to Start>Run, type sysedit. Look over the autoexec.bat for unneccessary lines,
click the win.ini and check for programs loading here:
[windows]
load=
run=
Open Explorer and navigate to c:\windows\temp and delete all files here. Empty the
Recycle Bin.
Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools>InternetOptions, click the Delete Files and Clear
History buttons. Click the Settings button, then set a reasonable size for the temporary
internet files cache. I'd suggest 40MB for a 56K connection, as little as 10MB for
a cable or DSL connection.
Right-click on the desktop, make sure Active Desktop is turned off, then click properties
and click the Effects tab. turn off Animate windows, menus, and lists.
Close all tray applications and hit Alt_Ctl_Del and end task on all items except
for explorer and systray, disable your screensaver, then run scandisk, then defrag.
If you're using Microsoft Office, look up this Knowledge Base article to kill the
Find Fast Indexer.
How to Disable the Find Fast Indexer
Finally, don't use those so-called RAM boosters
reghakr
P.S. You might also check out one of those performance sites, such as Speedguide.net
and Pureperformance.com. Good tips!

I noticed a article in the MS Knowledge Base that said your problem could happen
if the "normal" template was corrupted in Word. Sorry, I don't have the link, though.

The article that explains this issue is Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - Q307814.
All you have to do is search/find the file Normal.dot and rename it to Normal.old.
There is corruption in the template that stops Word from opening.

I fought this problem all day, uninstalled and reinstalled MSWord, downloaded latest
service pack. Scanned for a virus, checked system resources. I can't believe a template
file was the problem. Thanks for your help....

I got into the office this afternoon and couldn't open my Word files. Message says"Dangerously
low...". I tried closing all open programs, no luck. I then Google searched "Dell
dangerously low resource". Clicked onto this link on only the second try. I renamed
Normal.dot to normal.old and "Voila!" the problem is solved. God bless you all and
Google, too!!!!

I returned from some annual leave only to find either opening Word or a previously
saved document completely impossible plus the PC freezing up.
I followed the advice given and "Hey presto!" Word returned, thank goodness.
Many, many grateful thanks.

Thanks for solving my problem... I called the computer guy who works for my boss
and he told me to re-install Office 2000- which was not available. I tried changing
the normal. dot to normal.old and it worked like a charm. One thousand and one thanks!!!!!!!
